I thought it was interesting. Even with Ronn's little bit of venting you can see his impeccable technique. I also found the comics doing only a few seconds of material interesting as examples. Can you get up and start getting laughs in five seconds? Can you project your character and do a strong THIRTY SECOND set? This is what it means to be a professional.

David - I actually find short sets are easier to do than longer ones. You can condense and intensify your best material to hit them hard and leave them laughing. I've often heard acts on showcases claim it was hard and saying - I don't really get started until 20, 30, 40 minutes. My question was why? If you can't grab them in 30 seconds, an hour doesn't matter.
Last November I did a ten minute showcase for colleges. They gave you notices at 9 minutes to start wrapping - 9:30 to finish up and from 9:50 - 10:00 - a flash countdown. Acts were taking every second of that stage time. I went up, did 8 minutes and got off. I also got bookings when some of the stand ups didn't. BTW - Mark Wade - THAT may be an excellent topic for the 2012 convention! Sorry to hijack that - back to Ronn! Tom |

You mean 'how to perform for a showcase' as a topic? That would be very useful.
