Sammy,
I do the matchbox version of this and I have to tell you no one even asks about the holes in the matchbox in which I thrust my trustworthy blade (actually a little cocktail plastic skewer in the shape of a sword) through it. When I hand them the box and they note the weight and then open the box they are fried. I can only imagine how much more with this effect. If I were to perform this I would do a "Marked deck" joke as follows: "A lot of people accuse me of working with a marked deck. Well for this effect I will admit I have marked this deck with a very hidden "mark". Then I would show the slit. I'd go on to say that this slit helps me to hide my money as I demonstrated the coin going through the box. And I'd finish with "Now of course this only works in the skillful hands of the magi for you see as soon as I hand my marked deck of cards to someone what you just saw me do becomes completely impossible!" Hand it off and watch the fun begin. Good magic to all, Eric |

Sammy and gang-
Since getting IR in the mail today, my life was forever changed The routine I came up with today involves a single playing card cut exactly in half - lengthwise. Only one half of the cut card is used. BTW I have had zero concerns raised today about the slits Sammy, but this is how I'm routining this: "I've been studying magic for over 35 years and whats really amazing is there is always something new to learn. Recently I read a book about why the brain is so easily fooled by magic - and how the real magic is what happens inside your head. Let me show you why you can't always trust what you think you see..." I then bring out the Industrial Revolution (IR) deck box and hold it lengthwise close to my chest, with the cut card being held with my thumb so it peeks over the top of the deck (the effect being that it looks as though there is a full card). The angles should be fine if the deck box is kept close to the body. "The brain uses what scientists now call 'completion' - a kind of mental short cut that magicians depend on to fool you. For example look at the object I'm holding behind the card box. What do you see?" (the spectator says they see a playing card). "You see, that is what your mind thinks that it sees - but you can't always trust your eyes can you? In reality I am only holding HALF of a playing card, but your brain can't see the other half and so it *completes* the rest of the card in your mind ... and you don't even have to think about it." (I then take the half card away from the box with my right hand bringing it forward). "I also have a small box here that you are probably familiar with. What would you guess is inside this type of box?" (The spectator guesses that playing cards are probably in the box) "Exactly - I'm sure you've seen this kind of box so often that your brain doesn't have to think twice about what is inside it. But once again, your mind has taken a sneaky short cut" (I then take the half playing card and insert it into the slits so the card enters one side and cleanly exits the other. I then take the quarter and insert it and ask the spectator to remove the quarter as it exits) "So at this point your brain is probably telling you that the card box is an empty shell - filled with nothing but oxygen right? But that is where things are really getting tricky, as your mind is actually lying to you again. Could you please hold out both of your hands like this? I know all of this may be very *HARD* to believe, but look at what is inside!" (I then slowly dump the solid steel chunk into their hands - and wait for the jaws to drop as they surely will). *** I like the presentation as I didn't relate to the juggling and knives idea (no criticism, just not my style), and I felt that the wow factor in IR is what is unknown in the box and playing up that fact repeatedly. I just want to reiterate again that this (along with MD) are my fave purchases of 2011. Click here to view attached image.

This is what the cut card looks like next to the box. The slits are made slightly larger to accommodate the card so it can be inserted into the box later in the routine. A small slit is also made in the top card box flap mid point.

Sammy,
I don't have mine yet but I'm thinking of going down the "test of strength" route. Saying that I've performed this test many times today (explaining without explaining the slit), and that although feeling a bit tired, I can hopefully pull this off one more time. I'm even going to use a larger coin than I did the last time I tried it. Anyway, something like that Now having said that... Saysold, that is a fantastic presentation! Very nice indeed. |

How about you bring out the deck with a miniature sword through it and talk about King Arthur and the sword in the stone...
I am getting so tired of slitting the throats of people who say that I am a violent psychopath.

Wow- great ideas everyone! My personal feeling is that people will remember it as the quarter causing the slit. I think saying, "I'll push this quarter through this solid deck of cards." will help them misremember that point. That and the fact that I'm into it so quick that there's not much time to see the card box right off the bat.
That said, I always love a good brainstorm and can't wait to hear your ideas and thoughts!

Also, thank you to everyone who has sent me emails the last few days expressing their happiness. I guarantee that I return it tenfold! On that note, after putting up with Angry Bob for so many years, I'd like to share this one with you...
Hi Jamie- I received Industrial Revelation yesterday 7/20 and it is the BEST piece of magic I have ever purchased! I showed this to about 10 different people yesterday and everyone of them were blown away. My daughter's boyfriend ( who is a huge magic skeptic ) said that "there has got to be a way for the steel bar to come apart." I then handed him the bar to examine it, and he literally tried for 5 minutes to get that bar apart, and couldn't! He said that was the best trick he has ever seen! Congratulations on your success with Industrial Revelation. My boss at my first sales job many years ago said "Dan, you never get a second chance to make a first impression." Jamie you have hit a grand slam on your first at bat with this trick. Continued success in your career. You have a fan for life!! Dan Shrewsbury, Pa. What are we talking about? I gave IR the “wife test” last night, as I tend to do with all new material. She’s a huge skeptic, hates to be fooled, and is always trying to catch me out and cause some chaos. Knowing this going in, I intentionally structured things to lead her down the garden path a bit, and it went over with great success.
I had the card box and the quarter in hand, and the first thing she said was, “Why is there a slit in that card box?” To which I replied, “Because I’m going to push this quarter through the deck!” I showed her the quarter and said, “Quarter, right? Totally normal” in hopes that she’d be suspicious that it was a gimmicked coin. She was indeed suspicious (lol) and asked to see the quarter immediately, before I did anything else. After checking out the quarter and being reasonably sure of its authenticity, she handed it back and I pushed it through. She wasn’t very impressed, thinking that the box was empty. I received “the look”. I handed her back the quarter and said, “Oh you think the box is empty? No, I’ve got this in here…” and dumped out the steel block. She examined all of the items, one at a time. With the quarter she said, “This feels lighter than a regular quarter”. She handed it back, took the block, and said, “Wow, that’s heavy, lemme see the box.” She spent all of 1.5 seconds with the block before moving right on to the card box. She knew something was fishy somewhere, but couldn’t figure it out at all. She checked to make sure I had no extra gimmicks, wasn’t palming anything, etc. It was such a great feeling to know that I’d truly handed her everything, and was clean as a whistle. She then gave it the rating of “That’s crap”, which is the comment she gives to any effect that truly fools her. Any effect that gets that response from her always winds up being a worker for me! Naturally, this won’t be my regular presentation for folks. Since showing stuff at home is so much more casual, and I know I have a “difficult” crowd, I tend to cater everything for that particular situation. I’ve also been playing with a plastic knife instead of a coin, and definitely prefer it. Kevin

I think I will try on the next box to just cut a line rather than a too clean a rectangular cut for the slit. It looks too prepared for me, I like the slightly ripped forced pushed through appearance than the convenient cut slit . I don't know, Wrote down a lot of ideas last night during a break at a Jon Allen lecture which was awesome - talked about performance philosophy and showed some wonderful handling updates to some classic tricks and plots. Very lucky to have those opportunities.
Using a walking liberty half dollar, plan to use a vintage card case and the oldest coin I can find as another look as well as another box to rotate around. Also will use quarter sized washers and make up some hokey thing about metallurgy. This IR is so great!!! It's like having a large stage illusion shrunken down to that size of a deck of cards. I got back a feeling of when I started learning magic. Jamie, what made you choose this effect to re-invent it?! |

Hi
I'd like to commend Jamie on not only a top quality gimmick but on his great customer service! Long story short, I had a slight problem with my IR. Jamie replaced it , no questions asked. He even payed the extra shipping ! He is truly one of the good guys in Magic. His integrity and pride in his product cannot be matched. It's nice to see someone stand behind their product like this Man does. Jamie, thanks again!

Okay. I'm officially dying. I live in Los Angeles and have yet to receive IR yet. I think I call home every three hours: "Is it there?" No... UPS usually comes late. "Is it there?!" No. "Now?!" This is killing me. I've ordered a lot of tricks before... I've never been this anxious. I feel like I'm five years old.

Even though I have yet to receive IR yet, I do know - based on the pics Jamie sent and my familiarity with Matchbox Penetration - how it works. Is it at all possible to put an imperceptible slit on both sides of the box with an X-acto knife. Then, when doing the effect, pierce that slit and cut through to the other slit, creating an area where the card, quarter, plastic knife, etc. can slide through to the other side? That way you don't come with slit prepped already. (Or am I just being naive and impractical?)

I disagree a bit.
With your idea one of the major issues you may contend with is that when you push the quarter and pierce the small X-acto slit it is possible that some of the paper debris will also push through. Those bits of paper could then get caught - kind of like a hanging chad - and when you make the sq****e the pieces will probably get caught, inhibiting the complete cl****e needed. Then when the block is shown, you may see a nice chunk of paper sticking out and other issues that those who own this will understand. I have found that the pre-existing slit is best as you need to get that slit "cleaned out" from the inside of the box so that you don't gunk up the works. BRETT

Good point Brett. That could happen.
Funny how little attention the box gets until after the effect. Then the box gets the closest scrutiny of all.

Brett's 100% right!
Part of my process when I sign off on the Quality Control (make sure you compare my Grade 2 printing with my autograph signature, lol) is that I open and close each block several times and adjust the tension for each, then I put it in the box, slide the quarter through, remove the block, open it and clean out any "hanging chads" and then reset it for you. Whew!

OK, I finally get one of the ways to avoid the question of the slit. It doesn't need to be visible at all until the coin is pushed through. You can totally hide the slit until you insert the coin. It becomes a non-issue! I'm able to have the quarter in the box, remove it without anyone seeing it, and go into the routine without the slits being seen. Thanks Jamie and everyone else who offered suggestions.
Jamie, please PM me with any tips I need to prepare another box. Thanks to all, Sammy
