I took my IR to my local sports bar last evening and showed it to my favorite female bartender. This was my presentation.....my set up was as follows I have two cards just under the flap sticking out, one with a slit in it and one regular card. I pull out these two cards and push the quarter through the card with the slit and "state I have 26 cards with a slit and 26 normal cards in the box." "Would it be amazing if I can take this quarter and push it through the box and travel to the other side of the box." I push it through the box and I am sure they are thinking that all the cards have a slit in them for it to come out the other side.
Then I push it through the box again, and say "would you be more amazed if it went through a solid block of metal ?" Open the flap...pour out the block, and she was are more than amazed. Jamie, thank you for a great piece of magic !!! Joe |

Okay Sammy, you got your work cut out for you now. Best hit the nightclub scene. Joe that is very original and a nice routine!
I cannot wait to put this in front of a bunch of cops. Talk about the hardest, most skeptical audience you can imagine. You don't believe me? Next time you see a police car outside a Dennys etc, go inside and approach the table and show them Industrial Revolution or anything. I will wish you the best. Decomp

Sure did. That's how I usually perform it now (taking audience management into consideration. In a rowdy environment I would produce it myself).
Thanks to Salby and Jamie for their great thinking on this. I assure you that letting them lift the box and remove the block is the most powerful way to perform this. Just make sure you do it in the right environment. Sammy

Another Story + a photo of the magical moment that speaks volumes about the reactions to Industrial Revelation:
This morning I was at the Scottsdale location of Maggiano's Restaurant and was buying a gift card. I mentioned to the bartender and hostess (Catherine) standing nearby that I wanted to show them something and they enthusiastically gathered 'round. I took out the IR deck and had half a playing card peaking out from behind the back of the box and explained how in magic the brain "completes" what it doesn't see. I then asked what I was holding in my left hand. "A box of playing cards," said Catherine. I then said that maybe I could change their perception, as I then took half a card and passed it all the way through the card box. I then took a quarter, tapped it on the counter to show that it was solid and real, and passed it through the box. "Since showing you this *now* what do I have in my hand?" I asked. "An empty card box or a card box with cards that have cuts in all the cards probably," said the bartender. I then explained that the mind can't always be trusted as it takes short cuts. I placed the box on the counter and and asked Catherine to pick it up and see what was inside. Her reaction was immediate when she gripped the box from the sides and her eyebrows went up when she realized the box was much heavier than she expected. She opened the box and her mouth dropped open when she looked at the steel block, while the bartender kept saying "no way, no way..." This photo was taken of Catherine right at the "moment" of astonishment. Click here to view attached image.

I am loving this little gem!!! I am, however, concerned with it being steel, how it will work/look in 2 years from now. Any concerns?? Although it is a beautiful piece, spending $125 every 2-3 years can get costly. Then my other concern is if Jamie is making these, how long will he continue?? Should we all buy 2 IR's today?? .

Salby,
Like Jamie said - a little mineral oil will go a long way in terms of keeping this looking clean. Or you can go the American Eagle rustic look with a little natural oxidation. Also, I think I'm going to take a little sand paper to it. Experiment. I'll take the plunge and be the guinea pig! After reflecting on it - it is not the end of the world. BUT - the scratches do accentuate some things that I would prefer not to be. I took a photo as well and perhaps will post here if I can figure out how. Thanks for all your condolences and advice. I appreciate them, friends!

I'm not just talking about the outside cosmetics, but about if the inside mechanism rusts?? I am talking about the functioning of the piece 2-3 years from now. I have a few of the brass matchbox pentration blocks and I have owned them for many years. They all work like "new"... But they are brass, not steel. .

Salby I don't think the inner operation will be affected over time much - it's metal. Jamie also explained how to adjust the roll pin I believe so that your IR stay tuned over time. MP couldn't do that.

Here is a shot with my new plastic knife. Okay, who cut the deck?
No serrated edge. No point. A pretty gentle knife for this. Click here to view attached image.

It wouldn't expose it, no. But - on second thought. I'll keep it to myself. Perhaps I'll document the refinishing process and share that with you all.

There's also a Starbucks 100 yard down the road. I'll stop in and get some wooden stirrers for slowmotion and some sugar packs for a coin in a sugar pack effect I'd like to try. Thanks again

You're welcome Ralph. What I bought was a set of them for $2.99. In that pack there are 3 knives that will work and look like a knife. I am using the longer one, but there is also a nice shorter one.
There is another knife available by itself for 99 cents, but has an offset handle, so I went with the set.
