More great postings. WIsh I could afford a belt sander just to have for other things. I have a grinder however, need to find a way to hook up a wheel sander.

OK Jamie--real world post
Just got back from Chicago. Brother-in-law for years was close to and sometimes breaking some effects cuz he was so stumped. Used IR and he immediately grabs the steel block, checks it for a second and puts it down. Grabs the quarter and literally almost bends it looking for a "gimmick". Then, he takes the card case and literally peels it apart because he knows "that's the only item which can be faked". Still laughing my rear off, watching in my mind's eye his literal 10 minute dissection of the card case. Extremely worth it. This is the stuff with the 100% amaze factor. Thanks Jamie for a stellar product.--John K PS--Mine came with a black grunge smudge on one side which I can't wipe away. Decided (listening to Jamie) to let the block get good and funky. That way, no one will give it a real close inspection for very long. Take care. |

Is it sticky or tacky in any way? If so, you might try using some Acetone that I mentioned earlier to remove it. Just use caution when using it as that stuff is quite volatile, the fumes will hit you quick and it will suck the moisture out of a rhinoceros hide let alone your skin! I had to use Acetone by the quarts to remove the various grease based buffing compounds from the knives that I use to make. For some crazy reason I decided to keep the very expensive belt grinder that is used in making knife blades. It goes for about $1,400 now, but it still comes in handy at times so I should have no problem whatsoever if I need to do some touch up work on IR.

Gaffed--
no, not sticky/tacky. Just a small (about the area of a quarter) smudge that won't wipe off (granted, I only used water and a dry cotton scrap). It doesn't detract from the block, so I let it be. |

Finally got a first hand look today at the I.R.
It is without a doubt a thing of beauty and exceeds any of the 'solid matchbox' gimmicks I have previously owned. This is perfection personified. I challenge anyone who already knows the secret to easily and casually try to 'physically' divulge the secret when they first get it in their hands. Dick Joiner, a pro here in Toronto, fooled me badly with the solid match box many years ago (early 90's) at the Canadian National Exhibition. I literally tried to suss out the method for hours with the prop in my hands, and it was one of a VERY few effects that actually bothered me because I couldn't figure it out. Later a bought one and used on a regular basis in the restaurants and bars I was working at three times a week as a 'sobriety test'. If anyone was drinking I would ask to take the test by pushing a large metal pin (with long red ribbon attached) through the holes in through the top and the bottom of the matchbox. If they did so successfully, they were 'sober'. I would then ask them if they were in fact 'sober', could they explain how the pin got through the block of brass (or metal) that was inside the box. Open box and reveal the block. Wammo. Feel free to use this presentation as you like. Bill Abbott |

As my IR will be here soon, I have a question how to make the gimmick perfect.
To conceal the secret someone suggested that it is best to use super fine steel wool #0000 - can anyone confirm that this is the best methode and that #0000 wool it the best? I am surprised that Jamie didn't use stainless steal: is the best way to protect the IR from rust using weapon oil? Doesn't this make the steel slushy so it feels arkward and squirmy when handed out? |

Since Gaffed has graciously informed us of his $1400 belt grinder, I recommend sending all blocks needing sanding to him. Decomp

This thread has doubled the value of the IR I feel.
I keep adding more awesome shared handling ideas and upkeep/repair/preservation hints to this excel sheet I started specifically for the IR. And we're just basically the start group. |

The #0000 steel wool is just one of the ways to clean the residue of fingerprints, olive oil, pepperoni, or whatever. Just about anything could be used except polishing compound, which would buld up in the grooves. Oils should be wiped off after application, leaving a very thin , invisible coating. You don't want so much on there that it stains the box or slips out of your hand. That's why I like the Renaissance Wax. It doesn't build up or leave residue.

Ooooo, you probably don't want to do much to that part other than keep it clean.
Stainless would be more difficult to make in that thickness, so it would be pricey. Remember, we see the workings because we know what it is. No one else notices it. My son owns a MP and he couldn't even figure it out at first.

Quality seems to very a bit. I think even Jamie suggests too steel wool the metal, but it would be good to here some advice how to do it and if sandpaper (which size?) or steel wool (which size?) will do a better job. I definitely want to hand it out for close examination and at least my father would notice if it wasn't just perfect as he works with steel every day. |

Lol, before anyone goes out and starts buying belt sanders, let me point out that IR is ready to go right out of the box. It's is 100% deceptive, I guarantee it! Steel wool, etc, is only needed to remove surface discoloration, if you don't prefer it. And, as I mentioned, I firmly believe it's a great thing! When I tell a spec that it's a solid block of steel- I want their mind to think of a factory, of a junkyard, of a chunk of metal that's beamed across the country from some industrial city. Not something I bought at a jewellery store. When they pull it out of the box (this is how I'm performing it these days) everyone knows immediately what it is. "OMG! This deck is made of STEEL, lol!!!"
How about you guys? Are you letting the spec take it out of the box, or do you? And great ideas all around! I'm loving these real word stories! Who else wants to join in to our... The official Industrial Revelation Story Contest: 1) Lou Cirulli "Alright! So at the behest of Jamie I ended up taking Industrial Revelation to my restaurant gig. I just got back and I must say....THIS THING IS AWESOME!!!! I performed it for as many people as possible. You should have seen the reactions on people's faces after taking the steel block out of the box. Unreal!!! The only downside to it was how heavy it was in my backpocket. I'm glad I had a belt on! LOL. Top notch, Jamie!! This thing kicks a s s !!!!!! 2) Harry Murphy "One routine I performed (this past Saturday night) had me performing the coin in bottle following Industrial Revelation. The block of steel sat ignored on the table as I went into the bottle routine. It truly put the heat on the coin. I was ready to perform the bottle through table but decided to end with everyone examining the coin. In all it plays well for me!" 3) taller8 "It even passed the Girlfriend test today. I did break her pelvis bone on the reveal, and she still gave it two thumbs up. But that could of been the Vicodin talking." 4) Mercury52 "I gave IR the “wife test” last night, as I tend to do with all new material. She’s a huge skeptic, hates to be fooled, and is always trying to catch me out and cause some chaos. Knowing this going in, I intentionally structured things to lead her down the garden path a bit, and it went over with great success." 5) Sammy J. "I had a great time with this today. Got to perform it about a dozen times. My performance wasn't as good as it will get, but it went over very well. I've found that with an effect like this, that can stand on it's own, getting out there will make the presentation grow to a higher level, while still producing powerful magic in the mean time. Let me tell you, when that solid block of steel slips out of the box, jaws drop." 6) Salby "I tried it out at Tannen's and it received a great response." 7) saysold1 Here is a comment from a spectator at my Gym (the manager) who emailed me today - this is a young guy that pays a lot of attention to the WEIGHT of objects: "Great trick - I was blown away. Appears to be impossible as the block is so heavy, it truly defies physics and logic. Thanks for the entertainment!" 8) emyers99 "Did this for a group of magicians last night and they loved it." 9) Tommytallica "Performed it for a friend of mine and did the girlfriend test. IR passed both times. Looking forward to add it to my set." 10) rklew64 "Ok, my performance story: home Depot getting quarter sized washers. go to checkout and after buying the dozen, I thank them for selling me "magic washers" and then showed them what I meant, I left as soon as he said "What the hell?! I love tapping a metal item on the block to emphasize the physical impossibility. I heard a "HEY Wait" and I started running to my car." 11) mikenewman "I am learning "Chinese Charming Challenge" and thought to use the chinese coin for IR. I purchased the coins in Korea and they are really cool looking. Old, worn out. They're real Chinese coins. Anyways, I did it with IR, and I LOVE it!!!! IR is the easy part. Now to master CCC." 12) Magikbob "Here's my performance story...I broke out IR over the past weekend at an event in front of about 20 college students. I was speaking to them about how they could achieve the impossible with the knowledge they were learning in school. After penetrating the box with a card and a quarter, their jaws fell as I dumped the block onto a spectators cupped hands. He nearly dropped it from the unexpected weight. The males wanted to examine the block (as there must be a hole in it) and the females wanted to see the box. The quarter was borrowed , so it didn't get any attention. "Wonder was created"" 13) hou_dini "Just got back from Chicago. Brother-in-law for years was close to and sometimes breaking some effects cuz he was so stumped. Jamie is absolutely correct about this being perfectly deceptive right out of the box.
The "grime" that built up on mine was just from body oils. Let's face it, when you first get this you just can't stop playing with it. The only thing I didn't like about the residue was that it was only dirty in places that might hint as to method. I want mine to age. I now just wipe it down with a paper towel after use to try to even out the aging process. See you in Las Vegas, Jamie! Sammy

Since you don't have one of these in your hands yet it probably isn't helpful here to speculate on whether the gimmick is as "perfect" as you were hoping for. Relax - when your unit arrives in some weeks you will be thrilled at the exquisite quality of this. This is not a mass produced product - it is a hand made work of magical art. Each slightly different, each gets a signed off visual inspection by Jamie himself. I know its hard waiting for something new and cool like this - we all hate to wait! But posting guesses as to whether you will immediately need steel wool(you won't) or speculating as to whether yours will be PERFECT just isn't that helpful. As Jamie says IR is ready to rock right out of the box... The biggest issue someone had here was after a spectator tool a sharp knife to the IR and marred it. That has nothing to do with the manufacture of it but audience and prop management. Like any prop we are all looking to maintain our tools - so ideas about oils and various wipes and sandpaper ARE helpful. Please cool your jets and wait to get your own IR... as you will surely be thrilled. Jamie under-promises and over- delivers on his unique products - IR is in a league of its own. A home run product that will delight you and your audiences for a lifetime.
