Dude, with all due respect, if you read all 26 pages of this thread you'd find that it is pretty much only you who is not very impressed.
The notion that IR is similar to the old matchbox of years gone by has not gone unnoticed by your fellow magicians. Yet, taking the concept, which is a good one, and bringing it into the world of playing cards is a work of genius, IMHO. Not everything "new" is good, and vice-versa. Respectfully, MJ |

The good ones (brass) were exquisite - definitely not something you would find in a cheap magic kit. IR is a massive re-boot of this classic. The weight at 1.5 lbs is awesome. The look of pure steel and in a card box format is MP on steroids. The reaction from spectators (read the thread) is consistently jaw dropping. The fact the you may "know" how IR works doesn't mean that IR is some kiddie toy. This is a gorgeous effect - but maybe not your cup 'o Joe.

Holy Smokes, we have a lot to go over!!!! After all, this is the last day of our contest!!!
If you haven't written a post about a time you performed Industrial Revelation, please do so before midnight tonight. If you have IR and haven't performed it live yet, find someone today, lol! That's all you need to do for a chance to win an official "Anything Is Possible" bottle. If you don't know what one looks like, here's a pic: Okay, here's the latest entries, and then I'll post up the final list tonight. The draw will happen early tomorrow morning so that one of you will wake up and see they've won a bottle. Fun! ________________________________________________________________________ Latest Entries! 37) illusioneer "I performed this the other day at dinner for two friends utilizing my twist on Schrodinger's Box theory. He told me things in his 78 year old brain had just exploded because of this." 40) ArtIn "I played the card revelation very short and directly opened the box to let the block fall into her hand. So I took my IR to a friend's bar for some fun last night because I knew there was a punk band playing and the place would be rammed with tattoos, mohawks and leather and I figured that particular crowd would appreciate a nice slab of metal. I must have performed it about 15 times and at the end I would get each group to pump their fists in the air and shout "METAL!!" as I banged it on the table (they aren't precious about their tables there). Hilarious fun.
A huge thanks to Jamie for this.

I returned from MagicLIVE to a wife who instantly demanded to know how much money I "wasted" this year... I deftly steered her away from the suitcase full of great stuff and told her about an amazing illusion I was called onto stage to see... "The Deck Stab" She has seen the card stab a bunch of times, so she knew what I was talking about... I told her I got to keep the deck since I was the volunteer. I showed her the deck with the stab through it and used a butter knife to illustrate what the magician did in the effect. Her face was priceless when I dumped the brick into her hand. She immediately demanded, "Do it again..." (I am not sure if any other magician has experienced my life, but my wife NEVER says "Do it again." after seeing a trick!!!) Thanks Jamie... You may have single handedly earned me a trip to the next MagicLIVE... It is awesome!

There are so many pages here that I haven't gone through them all, so if this has been suggested please excuse me. The fact that the box already has a slot doesn't really bother me, but a couple of times I have tried out using a box without a slot. I took a pin and perforated a line of small holes where the slot should be so it looks like the coin is ripping the box as it's going through. I found that cutting a very fine slot on the side you start on with a razor is a little better because I was afraid some paper that might rip away and might mess me up later. On the back side I didn't care, the cardboard would actually bend out a little before it started to open up which is fine. I also kept my index and middle fingers close to the hole so it would tear nice as it went through.
The down side is a fresh box each time, but I have a million old boxes around (well, maybe not a million but a lot). The upside is it removes the only thing I thought might attract attention. Respectfully, Phil |

Well, I have now made the family rounds with my IR and it has passed with true wonder being expressed by all! I'm a hobbyist and don’t get to perform as much as I would like - disability keeps me home a lot - so the family gets first shot at all routines, and of course whenever there is a get-together (and there are many in this family!) I get to do some serious walk-around, so to speak. My family is pretty easy for the most part - except for my wife and my grandchildren - those kids root out the methods for more effects than you would expect! But IR has left them all speechless, mouths agape!
I can't wait till I do get out and work my IR for the unsuspecting victims - er.. spectators I meet! I have read some fantastic ideas for routines here in this thread and I'm sure I'll develop some once I start. The great thing about IR is that there is no method or sleights for folks to suss out; there isn't anything at all for them to figure out. This beautiful block of steel is just sitting there in their hands and they have no earthly idea what just happened! For those who love to work things out like a puzzle there is nothing for them to do, nowhere for them to start. Pure puzzlement abounds! Really loving this Jamie! Thanks again for such a great idea and wonderful piece of art! Jim |

Hurrah! We have a winner for our Official Industrial Revelation Story Contest! All they had to do was post a real world story about an Industrial Revelation performance. Let's take a look at our awesome entries...
______________________________________________________ 1) Lou Cirulli "Alright! So at the behest of Jamie I ended up taking Industrial Revelation to my restaurant gig. I just got back and I must say....THIS THING IS AWESOME!!!! I performed it for as many people as possible. You should have seen the reactions on people's faces after taking the steel block out of the box. Unreal!!! The only downside to it was how heavy it was in my backpocket. I'm glad I had a belt on! LOL. Top notch, Jamie!! This thing kicks a s s !!!!!! 2) Harry Murphy "One routine I performed (this past Saturday night) had me performing the coin in bottle following Industrial Revelation. The block of steel sat ignored on the table as I went into the bottle routine. It truly put the heat on the coin. I was ready to perform the bottle through table but decided to end with everyone examining the coin. In all it plays well for me!" 3) taller8 "It even passed the Girlfriend test today. I did break her pelvis bone on the reveal, and she still gave it two thumbs up. But that could of been the Vicodin talking." 4) Mercury52 "I gave IR the “wife test” last night, as I tend to do with all new material. She’s a huge skeptic, hates to be fooled, and is always trying to catch me out and cause some chaos. Knowing this going in, I intentionally structured things to lead her down the garden path a bit, and it went over with great success." 5) Sammy J. "I had a great time with this today. Got to perform it about a dozen times. My performance wasn't as good as it will get, but it went over very well. I've found that with an effect like this, that can stand on it's own, getting out there will make the presentation grow to a higher level, while still producing powerful magic in the mean time. Let me tell you, when that solid block of steel slips out of the box, jaws drop." 6) Salby "I tried it out at Tannen's and it received a great response." 7) saysold1 Here is a comment from a spectator at my Gym (the manager) who emailed me today - this is a young guy that pays a lot of attention to the WEIGHT of objects: "Great trick - I was blown away. Appears to be impossible as the block is so heavy, it truly defies physics and logic. Thanks for the entertainment!" 8) emyers99 "Did this for a group of magicians last night and they loved it." 9) Tommytallica "Performed it for a friend of mine and did the girlfriend test. IR passed both times. Looking forward to add it to my set." 10) rklew64 "Ok, my performance story: home Depot getting quarter sized washers. go to checkout and after buying the dozen, I thank them for selling me "magic washers" and then showed them what I meant, I left as soon as he said "What the hell?! I love tapping a metal item on the block to emphasize the physical impossibility. I heard a "HEY Wait" and I started running to my car." 11) mikenewman "I am learning "Chinese Charming Challenge" and thought to use the chinese coin for IR. I purchased the coins in Korea and they are really cool looking. Old, worn out. They're real Chinese coins. Anyways, I did it with IR, and I LOVE it!!!! IR is the easy part. Now to master CCC." 12) Magikbob "Here's my performance story...I broke out IR over the past weekend at an event in front of about 20 college students. I was speaking to them about how they could achieve the impossible with the knowledge they were learning in school. After penetrating the box with a card and a quarter, their jaws fell as I dumped the block onto a spectators cupped hands. He nearly dropped it from the unexpected weight. The males wanted to examine the block (as there must be a hole in it) and the females wanted to see the box. The quarter was borrowed , so it didn't get any attention. "Wonder was created"" 13) hou_dini "Just got back from Chicago. Brother-in-law for years was close to and sometimes breaking some effects cuz he was so stumped. Used IR and he immediately grabs the steel block, checks it for a second and puts it down. Grabs the quarter and literally almost bends it looking for a "gimmick". Then, he takes the card case and literally peels it apart because he knows "that's the only item which can be faked". Still laughing my rear off, watching in my mind's eye his literal 10 minute dissection of the card case. Extremely worth it. This is the stuff with the 100% amaze factor. Thanks Jamie for a stellar product." 14) ralphs007 I performed this today for three Carpenters I work with. It want over really well. The Carpenter nearest to me just started to laugh. I love it when they laugh! I handed him the block and he just gave it a quick glance. I was shocked that he gave it less than a three second inspection. He checked the quarter out for at least 30 seconds! 15) Decomposed My wife saw this and and was pretty much stunned. How do I know? Cause she followed me around wanting to do it or me to do it again. Never happens. 16) saysold1 (second entry because of video!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYOq0XWR25M 17) egoli Well, I've been doing IR for the past few days and I couldn't be happier. This is a terrific trick and congratulations to Jamie on the workmanship. I've done it over 20 times at work for customers on Tuesday and Wednesday and a half a dozen times while on Thursday while paying bills, picking up mail, etc. I'm using a combination of the plastic knife from Michaels and a quarter and I start off my routine explaining how, as a magician, I often have to shuffle the cards and then cut the deck. I then show how I have developed a new way to cut the deck and I insert the knife a couple of times. Then to confirm that things pass through the deck I push the quarter through. Finally I place the deck on the counter and ask them to pick it up. That's the first shock when they realise how heavy it is. I then take the deck and slide out the solid piece of steel. Nobody has any idea how this is done and the reactions are great. 18) Sammy J. (second entry because of video!) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VcXM5HTtcro 19) Blaque_Magik So I pull out IR along with a 500 Yen coin, It's just a little smaller than an American Half-Dollar but bigger than a quarter. I ask everyone to examine the coin to make sure it's real. They do, and someone even bites it to really make sure! I then ask them "So what am I holding in my hand?" to the typical reply of playing cards or Toranpu (Trump is what they say in Japanese). After they answer, I show them the coin and the box and tell them that I will attempt to put the coin through the box. I push the coin thru twice and everyone was really amazed! I could of honestly ended it right there and still looked like an awesome magician. So then I show them the box again and everyone sees the cuts in the box and then laughs! I ask them now what do they think is in the box. A couple say it's empty and some say the cards are cut. I ask one of the spectators to hold out his and and I drop the block out of the box into his hands. Jaws drop all around. I then hand it to my Wife's Aunt who didn't seem too impressed (and tried to steal my coin at the beginning...) and her face instantly changed as soon as she felt how heavy the block was! It was probably the most satisfying part of the trick. 20) jugglestruck I handed it out to five tables last night, it was prodded, pulled, oohed and aahed at but nobody came even close..... 21) puggo I start off by asking if anyone has seen the great illusion where Copperfield walked through the Great Wall of China, or Blaine passes through a solid wall? I then tell them that I’ll recreate that illusion, but close up! I show a coin (10 pence / quarter sized coin) with a little stick man drawn on one side “this is the magician!” I the remove the ‘deck’ of cards “and this will be the wall!” I then slowly pass the coin through the box, and then repeat so that everyone can see the amazing feat! “But the amazing thing is that Copperfield only passed through a stone wall…” I then reveal the steel block. “I can show you that again, but in your own hands… put your initials on the back of the coin…” I then get out a 2 pence coin and my Coinvexed 2 gimmicks “draw a wall on this coin” I then put both coins in the person’s hand, make a joke about dropping the steel block on the hands, talk about bending reality etc., magic gesture and reveal that the 10 pence coin is bent. Considering that my 'test' audience today were cynical fire fighters, IR went over really, really well. A couple of the guys picked the block up, tapped it with the coin, examined the box etc. but did not come close to finding the secret. The coin bend (with the David Penn inspired misdirection) seemed like a really natural follow on. 22) Blindside785 Just tried this out on a new patient I just met. I talked about word association, put the coin through, and when I put the "deck" on his hands his face changed. When he pulled out the block he knew I was business. The laughter and surprise on his face made it all worth it. Everytime I need to amaze a new patient I'll be pulling out I.R. 23) puggo (second entry because of video) OK, I've posted the clip my friend took. A couple of disclaimers (the usual excuses) -As I said, this was the first run for friends so the presentation is still being developed / polished -stinky hayfever so a bit nasal / hard to hear -etc etc blah blah! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z4q-cqxkvzI Charlie 24) egoli I have 3 or 4 people at work that I will no longer perform magic for. They analyse every trick and try to work out how it is done and then their fun is exposing the trick to everyone else. I decided to try out Industrial Revelation with them and each and every one of them was impressed. They had no idea what happened and either walked away shaking their heads in disbelief or complimented me. This is the greatest thing about Industrial Revelation. It is so clean and easy and everything can be examined afterwards. Well done Jaimie - this has made my day and made the magic so worthwhile to me. Ed 25) BlakeAdams "I played with it for a few hours and then performed it twice tonight. It went great." 26) Martin Waring "I tried it out on my daughters friend, 10 minutes after opening it. Tipped it out into her hand and she dropped it. Fortunately it missed her foot but now we've got a new dent in the wooden flooring in our kitchen, however IR is perfectly fine!" 27) David Thiel "IR is beautifully made, perfectly presented...with simple mechanics and a classic premise made in CANADA! An instant hit with my wife -- and subsequently a series of executives in two hospitality suites." 28) rklew64 "My daughter started second grade, dropped her off and then went to hang out at the front office (I'm on the school board) so no change on me, a teacher had a basket of popsicle sticks, asked to borrow one - the rest you know - good night Detroit!" 29) Jamie D. Grant (Ha! It's my contest, so I'm entering, lol. I'll donate my bottle to a new charity I support: Falling Whistles) (Performance is at 7:40) http://www.youtube.com/magicmagazine#p/a/u/0/QeRX_hVNvXA 30) balducci "Performed IR this evening for the first time, for a friend and a very cute waitress in a local Irish styled pub. Both members of the audience were suitably amazed. Sufficiently so that the cute waitress "VIP"ed (discounted) our drinks. At this rate, IR may soon pay for itself." 31) SpellbinderEntertainment "I've been putting my hand under the spectator's so the weight goes on mine as I support their hand, the weight is sizable and you need surprise not horror. Walt." 32) Ewan (Video- 2 entries!) 33) Jason :: Ellusionist (Picture Entry!) 34) Joemv I took my IR to my local sports bar last evening and showed it to my favorite female bartender. This was my presentation.....my set up was as follows I have two cards just under the flap sticking out, one with a slit in it and one regular card. I pull out these two cards and push the quarter through the card with the slit and "state I have 26 cards with a slit and 26 normal cards in the box." "Would it be amazing if I can take this quarter and push it through the box and travel to the other side of the box." I push it through the box and I am sure they are thinking that all the cards have a slit in them for it to come out the other side. Then I push it through the box again, and say "would you be more amazed if it went through a solid block of metal ?" Open the flap...pour out the block, and she was are more than amazed. Jamie, thank you for a great piece of magic !!! 35) John McDonald "Did this last night and spectator said, "but how could that block fit in the card Case......it's a bit like those boats you see in bottles." Fantastically well made and they handled the block and case and 10p for a while with no clue." 36) Robert M "Someone invariably says that there's no deck in the box. I agree, and place the box onto their outstretched hand. Or, I just open the card box and dump the steel block out onto the table with a loud thud." 37) illusioneer "I performed this the other day at dinner for two friends utilizing my twist on Schrodinger's Box theory. I know that can be said of almost anything, if you can make some cheap little something look great, ergo you're great. But this tests you. People, me included, have this habit of getting tricks and whether you do them or not, looking ahead to the next one, saying to yourself this other thing is better, I'd really kill if I had that. Now this is where this particular trick is different, there is no way something is made better than this, no way. The effect is simple, people think you are showing them some cute little trick like some kid will show you, but then you hit them right between the eyes. Everything about it screams quality. When you plop it down in someone's hand they can't believe it. Not only can you hand it out, you would be absolutely nuts not to, that's the best part of the trick. People can't believe how solid and heavy it is, it just adds to the effect. 46) J-Mac "Well, I have now made the family rounds with my IR and it has passed with true wonder being expressed by all! Mr. Gaffed,
Thank you very much for your input on my suggestion of just starting the slot instead of having one pre-cut. I totally agree with you. The difference I make between the 'goes in' side and the 'goes out' side is huge. Like I said, on the side that goes in, the slot is practically done, I cut it with a razor. You would be able to see the slit if you looked right at it. The coin is mostly just parting the cardboard. Keep in mind at this point in the trick people don't know what you're up to yet. I move it around a little bit to keep them off their feet. They think the coin is going into the box but aren't sure yet, they know something is happening, in the second or two this takes place the coin is already most of the way in and the slot is opened up quite nicely. Now all the focus in on the other side. As the coin goes against the inside of the box and it starts to bow out the effect is pretty cool. The perforations help out nice. If the 'goes out' side rips it's no problem as long as I don't pull the coin back any. Two things I have thought about. First at this point I can get a great look at the first side, if I've cowed it up I should be able to see it before I continue, and second, by squeezing in the proper manner it tends to bow the front and back away from the block which would help. Having said all that, I've only done it twice with great success both times. I'm taking somewhat of a risk and all it would take is for it to catch once and I'm sure I'll be kicking myself but for now it has been nice. Disclaimer: If anyone tries this and it doesn't work out don't blame me, I'm an idiot. I'm also thinking about trying out some of the knife ideas I've read here, they are worth a good look. Respectfully, Phil |

Someone mentioned completely opening up a card box to cut the slots in it. I have started to open up a few but getting that side seam apart cleanly is a bear! Opening up the bottom is easy enough but the sides are kicking my butt! Any particular method work well? Alternatively I will probably try to purchase some boxes if I can find them at a decent price. It's a shame I can't open my existing boxes cleanly, as I have dozens of them from old worn out decks.
Thanks! Jim |

Jim, not really neccesary at all. Just cut a slit and work the quarter through it until there are no hanging chads on the inside! I am on my fifth box and this method works great.
It was gaffed (Phil) who mentioned taking the box apart. He is a great guy, and that is what he likes to do. I'm just saying, it's surely not neccesary. Indeed, I bought 10 flat unassembled Phoenix boxes at "Magic Live". I have only had to use one, but I fully assembled the box before cutting the slits. Works perfectly! Sammy
