Anyone see the 1st episode of Penn & Teller's Fool us series last night? (UK Channel) I was very pleased for the veteran Mentalist who made it, but I was also surprised that P & T were fooled! I wonder do they have to put an act through on each episode, if so, that could explain it. Good show as always though.

Its just so good to see magic on prime-time TV isn't it? You know what, I think the Aronson trick that Jolly did is the kind of thing that if you don't know it, it should fool you. Although I totally agree that being the industry leading representatives P&T should have known that. Teller is one of the brightest minds in the biz. But we don't know the whole truth here, do we? Maybe it is we who are being deceived.
BTW their trick with the helium at the end fooled the pants off me.

Graham Jolley was the 'veteran' and he was great. He made use of a well known Aaronson slight, but as Ken pointed out if you do not know it, it will fool you. The necessary is done in a lovely off beat.

One does wonder if this show is not as fixed as Britain's Got Talent is.
On that Simon promotes and picks acts that are teeny pop acts to record and puts down anyone who isn't and so P&T may be picking based on who they want in their show and not on the very thing the viewing public think. Dual reality at its very best. Having said that if they chose Graham Jolley as he was entertaining and a good showman, then that in itself is a great complement. And he was indeed quirky, funny and good. (I wonder how that will translate to an American audience?)

Being in Canada, I've had to watch the clips on You Tube. Frankly -- I think I'd really like this show. I just watched one of the most entertaining Bank Night presentations ever presented by the classic John Archer.

It was ok - but STILL they publically explained a smash and stab method of one participant.
That said, he was using the girl's hand to crush the (empty) paper bags, so maybe he got what he deserved...

I even read one lay poster on another site posting that this performer had ripped off Derren Brown only he had done it with 99 plastic cups and a mouse! They really did think that Derren Brown really is the inventor of spike routines and that they are all done one way. Scary!

Not only a great magic show but great variety as well. (And you sadly don't get a lot of that any more) Not just the same magician doing different ticks but lots of different magicians/mentalists/others and styles. I really think the 'exposing one trick per show' angle is just to attract that group who hate magicians and so wouldn't watch a straight magic show: But which trick and who decides? It's a very cheap tacky angle in an otherwise great show.

Great show. Was very entertaining last night. I doo think they need to be a bit more guarded with the exposure, but overall it was very good. It's great to see some of these magicians/mentalists getting an opportunity to play for millions of people.

But overall I look forward to the rest of the episodes and trying to spot myself in the audience again HaHa! Thanks Dean |

Great Show apart from the exposure. I like P&T as performers but hate them as exposing "judges".
I think a series without them just the performers would be a lot better. |

I wish I remember the quote -- something Jim Steinmeyer once said -- about magician's guarding an empty box. The worry over exposing magic has been a staple since...well...since...well, ya know...forever. The best way to keep a secret is it to put it in print, and it seems to have done a fine job so far.
The very idea that two very smart gentlemen, like Penn and Teller, would publicly put magic in jeopardy is silly. Given the scant amount of "damage" that masked fellow did by exposing the greatest tricks ever a few years ago, just goes to show how QUICKLY the general public forget (or don't even care) how tricks are done. P&T have been the bad boys of magic since they stepped onto the scene -- I doubt they're going to change their ways after 30 years. Let the kids have some fun.

I wonder how many lay people, two days after the show, would be able to tell you the secret to the smash and stab routine? Very few I would imagine.
This is a light entertainment show and goes in one ear and straight out the other. I don't think magic's in too much danger All the best Sean |
