Hello, Not sure if this is the right place, but I would like to humbly ask for some help. I would like any information on how one would start up a Spook Show. I have become fascinated with the idea to bring this experience to Canada. I have not one iota of experience with theater bookings, how to procure movies, but I would love to take a shot at this. I do have a large number of sideshow exhibits and some pretty strange props that I think I could use. Any advice would be forever appreciated .

Listen to the interview with Keith Stickley, in [url=http://ballycast.com/?p=69]THIS EPISODE[/url of my podcast BALLYCAST. Keith has done pretty much what you describe. That podcast page also has links to two really good articles about the old-time spookshow.

I suspect if you post this question in " The spooky, the mysterious...the bizarre!" AKA Spooky you will have a ton of folks with ideas and advice. I was going to make a few suggestions when I first read this cause I thought you were going for a " séance " kinda thing but on closer inspection seems like you want an actual theater style spook show..sounds like a blast. Good luck and have fun.

This is definately a topic for the other forum. But I will add in that Keith does know what he is talking about. Also, a number of those old spook shows sound better than they actually were. The spook show operators had an attitude common with many outdoor showmen...GTFM! And they didn't care what kind of heat they generated with the lousy shows they did. And there is a difference in the audiences that went to those shows and the audiences you will encouter today. The spook show audiences were mostly teenagers that were looking for a chance to grab each other in the dark. And they could get pretty rowdy.
Still, putting together a show of spooky amusement can be a fun challenge. I have off and on for a number of years done a spook show style sideshow act out in Six Flags in NJ. It was the most fun gig I have ever done. And I'm currently doing a kinda spook show thing off-Broadway. |

Also check out the book "Pleasant Nightmares" which is a bio about Bill Neff and his "Madhouse of Mystery" spookshow. The book "Ghostmasters" is also a great reference too.

Conjurers, Carnies and Collectors had a great interview with the late Roy Huston, that I listen to ad infinitum. I'm having trouble with finding you a link at the moment, but iTunes carries this podcast.

I have a video that I shot of Roy at his home/workshop in Gib-Town It is an informal interview where he tells some amazing stories and talks at length about working with Bill Neff and doing Spook Shows. Also has some cool shots of his warehouse of illusions and massive collection of vintage mCircus, Spook Show, and magic posters.
I would love to get a hold of Yuka and get a copy to her, and see if it is something that she would like to be made public. It may have been one of the last interviews with Roy before his death. I don't currently have a contact number for her. |

If you advertise a "spook show" in the American South, you may get a completely different reaction.
