Hey Fellas,

Question for those of you performing professionally at the resort / casino/ cruiseship level.

What do you include as a part of your promo kit?

Any thing particular stand out in helping spark interest or seal the deal in your kit?

My direct mail letter.
The only other thing in my kit is the bound packet of testimonials and the video.

My kit is a customized folder that has my logo on the front. Inside I have my business card, photos of the show as well as sheets that cover off on client listings, awards and honors, a bio, quotes from satisfied clients and a sheet explaining the types of shows I offer. Each of these is printed on my stationary and looks profesional. What is nice about this system is that I can customize it according to who I am trying to market. They are also easy to put together and keeps my cost down while attaining a professional look and image.

David,

Despite DVD popularity, not all self made DVD's will work in all DVD players yet. There are still problems with the consistency in coding.

Anybody got a VCR?

If you go the DVD route, you need to go with DVD-. All the current generations DVD players play both DVD- and DVD+. However, out of the older ones that only play one or the other, there are far more DVD- than there are DVD+. We have gone the DVD route for close to 2 years now. Currently you can get a DVD replicated and the disc with 4 color printing for less than you can get a VHS tape and box in 4 color...however you will need to be volume ordering, like in the neighborhood of 1000 DVD's. Hope this helps.

Perhaps I could suggest a resource to make a dvd from your vhs tape.

http://www.todvd.net
They made mine for a fee of 24.95 and then each subsequent copy was only 8.00 U.S. funds.

They can include a menu and music for an additional fee.

If anyone has found a more economical company I would really appreciate it, Quality counts though!

Kevin,

Haven't seen you around in awhile! How are you and Kristen doing?

I've pondered using DVD but don't have the material for it currently. Hopefully by the end of this holiday season I'll be loaded.

CD ROM.

Reason:

When bookers open their mail, they usually do it in their office. What's in their office? A computer! If it's a tape, they'd have to take it all the way home and put it in the VCR (or DVD player).

Also, in a CD ROM you can launch a browser to your website, print out a contract form, have picture files for their own promo, etc.

It's flat and can be added in a promo kit folder.

Of course there are exceptions...

Well, I don't know of a single agent out there that doesn't have a VCR in the office, so VHS is still the medium of choice.

I even polled the agencies I work with and they ALL preferred VHS - only three of the ten were DVD capable. And I'm in Chicago! They ALL said the video should not be more than 10 minutes long, as well. One added that having an unedited video of the full hypnosis show would be useful as well, but that's another issue.

As far as other stuff, I supply single sheets (one page promos) for each program I have, a biography sheet, a headshot, a FAQ page for the hypnosis show and for the magic and a tri-fold brochure.

All materials are agent-friendly, meaning there is NO contact information on any of it as they will be using it to promote me THROUGH their services. I enclose my business card with the material, but do not attach it to anything. Many agents are paranoid about clients going behind their backs and booking talent, separately. This is called "backdooring."

Don't let that happen to you. An agent that finds out that yuou have backdoored them will blackball you in their own company and will tell other firms about you as well.

Play honest.

Respectfully,

Thanks everyone for the sage advice!

Curious, have any of you had any luck going direct without an agent?

I've exchange e-mail with a handful of performs who do use agents, but said if they had it to do over again, they would try going direct.

Any thoughts? Anyone ever make the direct route work for them?

Thanks again fellas!

What you put into your promo kit is important, but just as important, your promo packet must look professional, be consistent in look and message and really sell you the best that it can.

It is not doing you any good if your promo packet looks "thrown" together. Or, if all of your pieces are not consistent and all have a totally different look and feel to them. This just causes confusion for the intended reader.

Keep it clean and simple and consistent with a professional look and you will be doing yourself a world of good.
