I too have owned this levitation and thought his presentation was fantastic! I love watching performers who present it in an artistic manner. I'm now about to watch your Artists Dream. The magic isn't so much the actual effect but the presentation where you draw people in to your performance. That is what elevates this from a great trick to a wonderful artistic performance.

I thought it was awesome as well. I think American performers are plagued with the "Let's get right to it" mentality. This builds up nicely. I guarantee if I showed some of my fellow magi they would groan at the way the cloth was rolled out.

Kendrix I agree with you. Here in the US we are influenced by things happening too quickly. Look at a show like AGT - you have 90 seconds to present an illusion - what a waste! It simply becomes a trick - no presentation what so ever. The guy who did 5 illusions in 90 seconds looked like a dealers demo!! There was no art or passion involved in that performance at all. Just looked like somebody who bought some boxes and got some girls together to enter a talent contest. It's not a good venue at all to present the art of magic in a good light. Even Scott Alexander, who I respect came off as just another guy pushing a box on stage - there were no theatrics, no flair or style - and certainly no 'art'. I understand you are limited by 90 seconds. At least Scott was the most polished of the bunch. Magic is an art form, and as performers we need to respect and understand that. Once we do then I feel magic in the eyes of lay people will improve. Sometimes it is just better to turn down a gig if you can't do it, or it doesn't do the craft justice.
This is why I've always believed magic can not be presented on television. It's very much a live art form that needs to be watched. Watching Copperfield on stage is a much better experience live than TV. He was, in my humble opinion one of the only greats who present illusion well on TV - he created an art form with it, sadly those days are well and truly gone with what we see now. The Europeans have a more elegant style about their performances that really does make it an art form. Again, watching this performance took this 'trick' to another level. It is filled with class, elegance and truly something that makes it a much more magical experience. I watched other performances on youtube of other ladder levitations, and none of them even came close to this performance in regards to making it appear real. A great lesson here in timing, and really working on a performance to make it special. Again, well done and thank you for helping elevate our craft to an art form. |
