Well the Essential Magic Conference 2011 is almost here. I did not participate last year and have been giving thought to participating this year. I would be very grateful to hear from those who took part in last years event. The limited amount I have found on the web from participants seemed to discuss poor communications, DVDs not sent, etc... I love to learn and don't want to miss out on an opportunity, but do not want to throw away money. If you participated last year any feedback would be great. Thanks for your candid opinions.

The lack of response has been helpful in and of itself. I think I will wait another year and look at the feedback from this years Conference.

There's been a lot of positive word written about last year's EMC. I believe they posted Jon Racherbaumer's piece in "Magic," and there were other write-ups too. Yeah, the DVDs took until March or April to arrive. And the communication about the lateness of the DVDs was poor. Luis has promised this will be better this year. But the event itself was very cool, and if you don't go to every magic convention it was a great way to sample a huge amount of work by different performers.

I wrestled with the cost of it, but went ahead and registered today. I'm often too busy to go to conventions and time is a precious commodity.
What I found today, day 1, is that the quality of speakers is very good, and the whole set up is very nice. having said that, if I knew the streaming would be so poor I would never have subscribed. I wasted ages waiting for buffering live feeds which totally spoilt the enjoyment. Shame since the content was very good. The organisers didn't seem to respond well to the comments about these problems and they seem incredibly disorganised, to the point that the session 1 on demand video, (which I resorted to rather than watching a constant buffering screen), had a serious time lag / lip sync problem, out by a good 3 seconds. so these guys have a very weak techie grip on the situation, or they are cutting corners. Having to watch the live feeds on 0.5Mb speed, in rough quality also sucked. I'll be giving this a miss next year, unless it cost $30, which is about the value I felt I got, due to the awful technical issues. This kind of thing does nothing to enhance the perceived professionalism of magic. If you're going to charge a significant price, make sure people can enjoy watching the show, it's not rocket science in this age of technology. |

I'm more positive about it. The sessions have been very good. Technically, it's been a bit bumpier than last year, but I've been able to watch most of it fine. There have been intermittent sync issues and, I agree, they probably should have waited to upload the first half of the first session until they were able to bring it back into sync.

It's very good.
And it only gets better. I would recommend registering. And when you take into account how expensive TED seminars can be (the next one is in Edinburgh next week for $500!), the EMC is great value. |

I guess I'm just a demanding customer, expecting things to be as advertised. I don't think you can compare EMC with TED, I'm a former TED speaker and as such got to see, behind the scenes, just how much effort goes into producing a first class show. If your whole idea is an online live feed conference, surely THE most important thing is the quality and reliability of those feeds. If you went to a theatre to watch a show and they kept closing the curtain for a minute or two throughout the performance, would you not be entitled to a refund?
Negative issues aside, there is some really great stuff here, and I am thoroughly enjoying watching it 'on demand', which is altogether more relaxing. If they sort out the glitches, (and BTW the lip sync still issue hadn't been fixed 24 hours after they posted session 1, part 1 !!!??), this will surely grow into something incredible, it certainly has all the potential, and I'm sure the best intentions of the organisers. |

Having watched all of the sessions, it is not as bad as Stevini has stated. Yes,the first session had major problems, and they have had a few problems during each day however, it is a great way to attend a convention.
They always worked hard to try and fix the problems right away, we only need patience ! I am consoled by the fact that they will be sending out dvds of the entire convention so that I can see anything missed or that I want to see again. You should have seen and heard how luis vanishes a spectator's ( NOT stooge) car during every performance when he was on tour. Check out this modern way of having a convention, this is the last day ! I am a fan.. I think it is (glitches aside) fabulous. This is my first year .. I got a chance to see the dvds from last year and so getting involved this year was a no brainer.
When you consider that most magic conventions cost about a hundred dollars, then you add the hotel and meals and transportation in .. and unless you duct tape your wallet into your back pocket, another (conservatively thinking) hundred dollars in the dealer room.. EMC is incredibly cheap. and yes.. you get a full set of all the sessions to watch again and again. (rather than try and reconstruct (from cryptic, illegible notes) the details of that trick you wanted to remember... I will let you know how soon the dvds arrive but I know that I will treasure them when they do. Did you see the lineup of speakers?? whew..crème de la crème.

Technical glitches aside, I found it incredibly enjoyable and think that the conference is very underpriced. With little exception, all the presentations were solid. The only thing that I would like to see next year is the ability to open the chat in a separate window. I use dual displays and it would be nice to have video fullscreen and still be able to participate in the chat sessions.
Luis' explanation of vanishing an audience member's car was a wonderful lession in how much work and thinking goes behind such an effect and how simply, relatively speaking, it can be accomplished. However, I am a little disappointed that he explained it because I fear some people will take the wrong lession from it...but that's their problem, not mine. I missed the first EMC but, after the first day, I upgraded my membership to be able to see the 2010 videos. I was not disappointed. At first, I was a little apprehensive about the Conference, not knowing really what to expect. For me, a lot of the fun from the conventions comes from the late night sessions and camaraderie formed during the events; by the same token, you generally don't see presntations like Mike Caveney's, unless you're the lucky recipient of an invitation to the Conference on Magic History. Sign me up for 2012 (and 2013, 2014...) |

Have the DVD's for this conference come out yet? I haven't received mine (or I wouldn't be asking, obviously) and I was wondering if anyone knew what the timeframe was?

Mine have come in today, too. Halfway through the explanation of the Million Dollar Mystery and my mind is blown.

Agreed, the Million Dollar Mystery explanation is amazing. And still just scratches the surface! I can't figure out how the performers know where to stand without giving it all away. Can't wait to watch the rest of the set.
