I picked up my friend of 30 years from the airport today. She has heart problems and is working on her 'bucket list'.
She just completed her dream holiday - 2 months flying town to town and being photographed in front of every landmark the US has to offer - I spent a wonderful 2 hours skimming through pics. She has nothing but praise for the friendliness and courtesy of Americans. She had the time of her life. |

Destiny, I'm glad she had a great trip. We like to beat up on each other, but we're usually pretty friendly to outsiders.

Bill,
I can't count how many people over the years have praised the hospitality of Americans to me. |

I'm distracted by the lack of apostrophes in you title. ; ). But good golly, every landmark! That's quite a trip.

Knowing you are collecting the things Tom, I thought I could spare one.
I may have generalised when I said 'every' (sorry about using up those 2) monument but I swear she was in a different city every day of the approx. 60 between when I dropped her at Brisbane airport and picked her up yesterday. The only other option is that she's being hiding out at the airport photoshopping pics and posting them to Facebook, but then how did she acquire the souvenirs she brought me? |

Thanks for the story Destiny. It's nice to occasionally here something nice said about the US by someone outside the country. Every time I've visited a foreign country; New Zealand, Australia for a short trip, China, and most recently Thailand, I always come back thinking that the people were some of the nicest I’ve ever met. Hopefully the trend continues.

We like people here who talk funny. Why do you think Jolly Roger, and James Munton have such successful careers here? If you wanted to move to the US we would also welcome you with open arms, Americans have been looking for a replacement for Devine for years.

American's generally like people with foreign accents. I wonder if Americans who vist Australia, or New Zealand get special treatment there?
Pakar Ilsui I have always wanted to visit your part of the world. I would love to go to Maluka

They get special treatment here in Malaysia as we LOVE the American accent.
Most TV Programs here are from America, so it sounds very Hollywoodish to us... I especially love that Southern drawl... Al, I could be wrong but I think you mean Melaka (our Historical City). And you're most welcomed, gimme a buzz if you're ever coming my way...

I kinda sound more like a New Yorker.
The name of those islands are the Malukuan Islands in Indonesia. The spice islands that Christopher Columbus was trying to find when he accidently bumped into North America. I'm sorry I spelled your name wrong, but you left me no time to edit.

Ahh... The Indonesian Islands, I thought you were talking bout Malaysia. My bad.
And Al, I like the New York accent... Always reminds me of Cop Shows. No worries bout my name, I've spelt it wrong myself a couple of times.

Yes, I know that accents from these countries are distinctive, but the problem was that layered atop her mild Asian accent was a mild Southern drawl that made the whole thing inscrutible. Charming, pleasant, but inscrutible. Of course, there's also the Level II CFA candidate I had in a class in Los Angeles a year ago who opened his mouth and sang forth with a diabolically Scottish accent. (He was reared in London, but works at the Bank of Scotland branch in L.A.) I did not expect that at all! |

What's funny is watching an Asian person suddenly start speaking with a deep southern drawl.
And, I've been to England twice and both times I got special treatment when I started speaking, they loved the southern accent, they couldn't get over the word "Y'all."

Once I was talking to a woman on the phone with a heavy Veit Namese accent, but she used the word y'all, and I said to her you sound like a real southern miss. She was speachless, and told me that she has been trying for years to fit in. I really made her day.

Since my old lady's daughter is in New York she was asking about what souvenirs people wanted. We asked where all she was going and one was central park. I told her to bring back a New York squirrel to bust our squirrels' chops.

On my trips to the States I've struggled to have my name understood, order a "Bear Claw", explain to US customs that my suspicious baggage contained only "speaker stands" (and many other varied examples) until I've repeated it in a generic non-region-specific American accent which has made my travelling companions variously cringe or crease up laughing at its outrageousness!
In the Walgreens on Fremont Street the cashier said "Hey man, you sound just like Braveheart - are you from Scotland Yard?" I'm Irish by the way. I love you guys |
