Hi all
Let me set the scene I recently made a speculative call to a competitor to ask if they had any positions available as I am not really enjoying my job at the moment - within 3 days I was sat opposite the General Manager and the Managing Director attending an interview. Due to the speed at which all this happened I had forgotten that I had put magic as a hobby on my C.V (Resume) and had not prepped anything to show them should they ask. You guessed it...at the end of the interview the general manager said "One more thing...I see you have put magic as a hobby?"... they both look at me expectantly, and all I can do is talk about how I got into it and what a great hobby it is etc...hopefully showing how dedicated I am and how great I would be as an employee...Ha!!! Anyway my question is - What effect could I have finished with that would have been a nice finish to the interview? What would you have done given the situation? Cheers all Matt |

Paper Balls Through Table is a great effect, with which you could segue straight into Two In the Hand/One In the Pocket, with the finale of making all three finish in their hands. This is one of the most overlooked routines in the restaurant setting.
If you would have had access to a coffee cup: a chop cup routine with paper balls or even a Benson Bowl Routine using paper balls. Another overlooked effect is Salt Shaker Through Table, but make the coin (borrowed, of course) penetrate the table first, then put the shaker through whilst attempting a second penetration with the quarter. There are a couple of other possibilities that could have been used, but my intention in answering your question, at least from my point of view, was to keep it short, simple and effective using borrowed objects. I hope this information is useful to you! |

I ALWAYS carry a silver dollar in my pocket just for those special moments. There is some cool things you can do with a business card, and Joshua Jay's Book: "Magic: The Complete Course" has some cool things you can do in an office setting with whatever is at hand. Guess it's all about being prepared, anyway, that's what I learned in the Boy Scouts.

I never leave home without my Wonderland Dollar. It's in my wallet and takes up almost no space. When this sort of thing comes up - out it comes!

Expect and prepare for the unexpected, that way if you are caught by surprise, you are ready for the surprise. I think learning and mastering some of Gregory Wilson's impromptu effects would be a great idea. A great effect from Gregory Wilson would be Quicksilver. It's impromptu, can be done at the most unexpected times, involves the spectator and is great fun and will leave the spectator amazed and happy. But you have to practice it, make the effect your own, practice it in front of trusted family members or close friend and get some of the kinks worked out in how you present the effect and make sure it works in amazing and entertaining people who don't know you so well when they surprise you and ask you to perform magic at an unexpected time.

Extreme Burn is usually in my wallet and I also carry a couple of large English pennies in my pocket. Coins Across or other simple coin vanishes and productions are easy to do on a moments notice.

I agree, Extreme Burn is always in my wallet. Ones to Hundreds, can't imagine anything stronger!
I also have a Morgan Silver Dollar in my pocket all the time, so I can do a one coin flurry. !

Of course you shook hands when you left. A good electric shock might not get you the job, but when you return his Rolex it might just sway it!

You should have done a trick. I almost always have a Bic or Papermate pen and can perform "recapped" and my wallet is set up for KK. So if nothing else, I have those 2 things available. But I can see how you would be totally focused on your purpose for being there etc and may have been totally empty handed.

I asked myself this question a long time ago, and came to the conclusion that learning a few simple pieces of mentalism can bail you out in a case like this. I can always find a pen and paper just about anywhere and spend the next five minutes "reading" their minds. I use a simple magicians force routine as the opener using several rows of numbers, followed by naming a number that they randomly came up with. Both effects only take a few minutes to learn, and require no setup, but play really big if your performance is strong. A billet peak is also great in a case like this. . . many methods out there, so find your favorite and put it to work.

I anticipate that when my Jay Sankey "Slyder" arrives, ( http://www.sankeymagic.com/detail.aspx?ID=48457 ) I am going to have that thing in my wallet 24/7. Takes just a TINY amount of pocket space for what appears to be some incredible effects.

Just ask for a coin and do a few quick vanishes
I had a situation that I had nothing on me too I usually never leave home without coins but this time I was in a hurry. I just asked for a few coin and did a few vanished and changes, copper silver, CUW and coin through spectators hand (I thought about the trick myself and only after a few months found a similiar version, tough not the same) in an office there is probably a pen, so you can do Greg's recap, also there should be some napkinks nearby so a spongeballs routine is possible. all of this effect you can do without anything in your pocket, only with borrowed objects and I think you have a 10 min show |

Sounds like you did OK, magicmeriz. You tied your dedication to magic to a positive work ethic, which was relevant to the job. If they wanted to see a trick, they could've said so. Looking at you expectantly was somewhat ambiguous, and could've just meant they wanted to hear more about your interest.
I carry Tony Curtis's Killer Wallet as my regular wallet, all loaded up with Kenton Knepper's Kolossal Killer, partly so I always have something, and partly because it's a great wallet. But even so, I wouldn't have launched right into a trick in a situation similar to yours unless the interviewers specifically requested one, or I at least asked first if they wanted to see something.

If you're not a sleight of hand guy, then you definitely need to pack a couple things into your wallet. KK/Heirloom if you have room in your wallet, and I highly recommend Kioku by Outlaw Effects.
