Hello All,
Has anyone picked this (http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/2492) up? How does it differ from the Tarbell course in magic? Thanks, Jordan |

I believe that book only has the first six books of Tarbell. Otherwise, it's the same.

Am I right in thinking that there are 8 total books from Tarbell?

The single book covers only the "original" 60 lessons, which are available through many channels (The Learned Pig Project, lybrary.com, etc.). The books are a much-expanded version of these lessons and include much more material.
There are 8 total Tarbell Course in Magic books. However, they are not all from Tarbell. That may sound confusing, but Harry Lorayne wrote book 7 with material that he compiled. Book 8 was by Richard Kaufman, but it was an assembly of Tarbell's previously unpublished items. Both are great resources, but the 8-set of books contain much more than the original lessons. Hope this helps. If your'e looking to get a deal on the books, I got mine on eBay like new for a great price, and people periodically sell them here on the Café as well. |

In addition there is "The Tarbell Companion" compiled by Steve Burton consisting of material from the original course which did not make Vols 1 to 8. Steve also compiled Volume 8. Steve also compiled the "Tarbell Study Guide" which is a course in magic referencing material from Vols 1 to 8. The idea was to allow the magic student to learn magic as Tarbell originally intended when he published the original correspondence course. Not sure if it is still in print but well worth looking for in my opinion if you have Vols 1 to 8.

Still a lot of confusion going on. The original lessons are available digitally as mentioned. However Tarbell re-wrote the original lessons and ADDED to them to produce the six volume course published by Tannen's. [N.B. Tarbell discusses the hard bound volumes and the fact that they are rewritten and are an expanded version of the original course] Harry Lorayne not only WROTE volume seven some years AFTER volume 6, he also indexed all seven volumes! As stated previously, volume 8 was compiled by Steve Burton and Richard Kaufman. [I have NO idea what the people at D. Robbins were smoking, but, volume 8 stands a bit higher physically than the previous seven volumes and yes it drives me nuts!]
One advantage I can see to this volume is portability - if indeed a 900 page book is portable - I do not carry the Stewart James volumes or the Al Baker book from Miracle Factory around. But I do confess that this portability does have its allure. When I go on holiday, I also love to bring a magic book and the idea of hauling the 8 volume Tannen's/Robbins set isn't exactly kosher on airlines nowadays. Perhaps the REAL benefit however is that people who have wanted to dive into Tarbell now have an affordable print alternative. For the DVD kiddies, 75.00 USD gets them 1 and a half DVDs or a 900 page original Tarbell. I hope they make the right choice Ahimsa, Vlad |

Interesting about the physical height of volume 8, Vlad! I hadn't noticed that at all. When I get home, I'm going to check; I always thought they were all the same height! Most magic books I've seen are in two sizes (talking height and width, not the depth) with Tarbell 1-8 being the smaller size. Whenever I get a book that doesn't conform to one of those two sizes, it definitely drives me crazy.

Vlad, I checked last night, and I don't know where yours came from, but my volume 8 is the same height as all the others!

Hi Jeff,
My Tarbell set consists of the first seven volumes published by Tannen's. The eighth volume is published by D. Robbins. It is DEFINITELY just a tad taller. Maybe the Robbins reprints are taller than the Tannen set? Ahimsa, Vlad |

Ah. That must be it because all of mine are Robbins reprints.

The Robbins heights may have varied from printing to printing.
I have Tannen 1-3, Robbins 4, Tannen 5-6, Robbins 7-8. Among mine, 1-6 (mixed Tannen/Robbins) are all short, while 7-8 (Robbins only) are taller. |

How different are the original lessons from the published versions? I've been studying the original lessons from the online sources and wondering if I should instead just buy the volumes.

I believe the books are mostly expanded. So you just get more material. To verify or disprove that, however, you can look at magicref.tripod.com/books.htm to see the table of contents for the Tarbell books, then compare it to what you see online.

Thanks, I'll be taking a look at that.

The original lessons are different: I'm working through both the original lessons now and reviewing the material in the books. I like the format of the original lessons which seems to follow the following pattern: 1. Learn the principal, then learn a trick(s) based on the principal. I find following the original lessons and then reading any expanded info in the books is a good way for me to go. The trick is to do your own expansion. For instance, lesson 3 covers the TT. I read the lesson, learned the principal, then started researching everything else I could find on the TT, then started thinking about how to apply the principals and moves to my own effects. I'm much more interested in creating my own effects than copying someone elses.
