I have been using my hands-free drawing in an interactive dialogue routine, and have a strange problem:
The kids are SO tickled at seeing the thing talk, that they laugh uncontrollably whenever he speaks. It's nice to have a strong piece like that in the show, but I would also like them to hear the dialogue and understand the skit. I guess I could just throw in some choice insults since they'll never be heard anyway, but I'd like to hear the thoughts of others. |

Starrpower,
Yep, same thing here. The first time I performed it on stage I swore I'd buy a monitor speaker because I couldn't even hear the track myself to follow along with it! You might have a few options. First, divide the sound track into two. Have the drawing roll his eyes, and talk for two seconds, then he freezes while the kids have heart attacks and scream. After a few seconds, after they've started breathing again, you can advance your sound system to the next track and start him going again. It may take multiple tracks. (Alternatively you can just edit the sound track to include some silence.) Second, let the kids scream for a second, and then quite them down by "shushing" them and pretending you're trying to listen to what the character is saying? I say let kids be kids. I know we as performers would rather they listen to the track and follow the skit (and get all the witty jokes!) but they're kids. I think they'd rather go crazy over the fact that the drawing you just drew is talking! Just my thoughts! Best wishes! |

I've experienced the same problem from time to time. Sometimes the kids are just so worked up over the drawing actually talking that they scream every time it moves. Often times, its a couple of kids that seem to feed the frenzy. The best I've found is to just wait them out. Let them get it out of their system a little and slowly advance into your routine. Let them know that you need to "hear" what your character is saying. That seems to help. But in the end, if a room full of kids want to scream...you know they will.

Lol... I have the same problem as well. That's a great thing though... I always turn the volume up a bit louder because I know this will happen. I also say, "Shhhhh..... I can't hear him, what's he saying?????" etc.... That'll quiet them down a bit. What a great effect for sure!

But I'm not good at it, Mark! Just like I am not good at juggling. I try and try, but I am not gonna juggle in my show because I am not good at it. I wish I WAS good at vent because I think it's a great skill to have, and I respect those who can do it well. But I am not one of them.
BTW, it's funny I am responding to you here, Mark, because earlier today I was working on my car and I put some old marketing CD's on to listen to ... and one was YOU from probably 20 years ago! |

I have the same problem all the time. I always make sure to turn up the volume higher than I would think is comfortable, so both the audience and I can hear it. If necessary, I will stop the track to wait for the hysteria to wind down. I also have the MDB say, "What's that, I can't hear you, my ears are too small!" This gives me a chance to refocus the children before pandemonium sets in.

Starrpower,
Just got done reading Kid Control by Julian Franklin. If you have it, maybe try his method "directing behavior through mirroring" found on page 101. Perhaps this will help? Not sure but thought I'd post anyway.
