The first illusion that I built was a Flash Appearance. The first that I bought, although probably considered an illusionette, was Stocks of Zanzibar, used. The first large illusion that I bought was a Girl Without a Middle that a friend had made. I bought it used, as well. It was an awesome piece of equipment!

I've never built an illusion, but the first illusion I bought was a Ralph Adams sword basket. I purchased it from the great man himself.
My next illusion was an Abbotts Canvas Covered Box, purchased second-hand from Dan Jones a/k/a "Dando the Great." I sold them both, and a lot of other large props, when I moved to NYC in the early '80s. |

My first illusion was a doll's house built from abbott's workshop plans - then I built a shadow box ( plans in Tarbell) and two big round cage girl productions. Late 70s.

My first illusions (which I built) were a Sub Trunk which was a great investment and a stair case production that was one of the lamest ideas I ever had. It is now a TV stand in my parent's home and is much better utilized that way than on any stage.

"When and how did Chuck Jones loose control over Mid-Made. Its generally accepted as public domain these days but Chuck was the originator of this. How did it get to be public domain? Because of the Osborne plans? Because Chuck didn't defend it? Combination of both? Something else?
If anyone knows the history of how this happened I'd love to know as it has always puzzled me" there is apparently some controversy as to how original it was with jones. that aside, and even assuming it was completely original, legal protections rarely attach to magic effects under the dominant intellectual property regimes: patent, copyright, trademark, and trade secrets. the enforcement is mostly informal -- which, in some instances, can be more potent than litigation or other formal means of enforcement. although the example of robert harbin and the zig zag exemplifies the possibility of the magic establishment closing ranks against those thought to be infringing on someone's creative product, more often than not an originator will have to take all or most of the initiative to draw attention to acts of piracy and urge both the purported infringer to stop infringing and others to not buy from the infringer. add to that the fact that there are rarely instances of pure, singular innovation unambiguously attributable to one person, and the stories are often confusing, or there is no story at all. the mis-made lady likely fits into one or more of these patterns. it would be interesting to hear what happened; but in that the method is so intuitively obvious, it would lack the compelling aspect of a true leap of genius that is appropriated by others. |

The first small illusion I ever worked was this piece of junk where I put my hand in a wood rectangle and the magician would insert blades and then tilt it back making it look like he sliced my hand off. (no offense if any of you own it but this is to slicing effects as Marshal Brodien is to the plastic ball and vase) It usually worked if the audience was under 8 years old. Then we graduated and got a sub trunk. The first few shows (maybe few hundred) it was pretty bad....well compared to now. We are very fast, though not Pendragons fast, but then again who is. As far as making an illusion, that is way out of my league.

My first 'homemade' illusion was a large squared circle. What a piece of junk I created! It weighed a ton and the paint always felt sticky.
My first 'bought' big illusion was an entire show in excellent condition: Crystal Casket, a Sub-Trunk, a second Sub-Trunk with double t*** d*** for a large cat transposition (...smelled like kitty pee), Sword Basket with swords, Thin Model Saw in Half, Azrah table with form, Shadow Box. I have since customized, decorated, and re-built most of these to suit the needs of my current show.
Wonder is very necessary in life. When we're little kids, we're filled with wonder for the world - it's fascinating and miraculous. A lot of people lose that. They become cynical and jaded, especially in modern day society. Magic renews that wonder.

I was around during the Copperfield tv specials in the 80s
which completly changed magic presentation so Illusions were the order of the day to finish all acts.. I built a Broomstick Illusion with a great harness for my assistant at the time Used in about 40 shows over 3 years or so-worked well , looked amazing I used an 80s classic song-Sheena Easton "for your eyes only" For the Illusion-LOL Great memories.... |

The first that I bought was an Abbott's Chinese Chopper. The first one that I built myself was a shadow box, that was redesigned so that it didn't need to be revolved.
I'm not likely to try to build more illusions. I like the professionally built stuff. |

I was never into illusions, per se, but one day client wanted me to do several shows, but wanted an illusion. I told him I didn't have one, but he said if I would do the shows he would buy it, give it to me, and pay my fee. What could I say? Went down and bought an Owen's Zig Zag with ATA cases. Almost 30 years old, hundreds of shows, and it still looks fantastic!

My first illusion was one I built called Bride of the Blades. Used Paul Osborne plans and still use it once in a while. My first bought illusion was Modern Art built by Owen Redwine in the early nineties.

First illusion I built was a Sub Trunk. It was god awful lookin', but it worked great.
Next came a horrible Zig Zag made out of flakeboard. (Hey, the stuff was cheap and I was 14...what did I know?) First purchased illusion, a second hand Super X. |

Wish I had pics to share. The Zig Zag didn't survive the tornado...of course, the HOUSE didn't, either.
But the Sub Trunk did. <wink> |

Wow all great stuff! I purchased a Sword Box, then a head chopper from Owens. I also purchased a Cutting in six,a Zig Zag, a huge Squared Circle, and a Palanquin makers unknown. Then I started and still do make custom Head Chest, Tear Apart Vanishes, Rainbow style House, Production boxes, Super X, and tables. It is almost like work!
