Grrrr!
The earlier posts in this thread were actually helping me understand the issues about (my upcoming) Medicare. I ALREADY UNDERSTAND CHEESESTEAKS! Cheesesteaks are (like beer) a sign that God loves us and wants us to be happy. Any hope of getting back to Medicare! |

Universal healthcare is a sign that we love our neighbours and are prepared to spend a bit of money to help one another out. Each person who pays and collects gets a bargain. Each person who pays and never collects is even more fortunate.

There are toll free number that you can call that will guide you through the paper work. The company that I used was in Arizona, but through their computers they know what plans are availible in every state depending on your finances, and medical needs. It is all free they receive a small commission from the subscribing health care providers. Then they send you the applicable literature that you selected by email. All it takes is a google search, and a phone call. Medicare is a maze, and it is practicly impossible to wade through all the midicare junk mail you are probibly already receiving. When you talk to the advisor be sure to discuss the drugs that you are taking, because if you are on expensive medication you don't want to spend your whole social security check at the drug store. IMHO AARP sells only high end health care.

I went the AARP/United Healthcare route for both my part D Rx drug plan and my Supplemental plan F. Yes it's a bit pricey but compared to the individual health insurance plan I was forced into in 2008 it is much cheaper, and I didn't see how I could do any better and get most of the coverage (and flexibility) I wanted.
From what I gather reading some of the COPD listservs I visit, a lot of people are getting their drugs from India or Canada, particularly the ones where there are no generic equivalents. However first I am looking into NY's EPIC program to see if I qualify; my income year over year varies widely, and I think in 2010 I showed relatively little income. According to the woman on the phone they don't pay attention to assets, only to income. |

If you don't qualify for that, something else to look into would be the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. Some of drug companies participate in PAP, allowing you to get the name-brand drugs at reduced, or no cost (I know that diabetic medications are not among them). They do have income requirements too, which varies company to company. The information is available here:

AARP was too expensive for me, but then again I don't have COPD. The discount drugs to needy senior citizens in Pennsylvania is called PACE, and it is funded by the PA lottery commission. Getting old is not for the faint of heart.
