Hello everyone. I don't know where to put this so this is the closest I found to my topic. Anyway, I want to start doing stage magic, with some comedy in it. I love to watch WGM. I also love levitations. I know most of the close-up self levs, but I want to learn the big stage levitations. I'm only 15, with barely any money right now. Can anyone please recommend some good stage books, videos, illusions that are not expensive. Also can anyone please post some levitations involving an assistant floating. There was one on WGM 5 I think where a girl was floating in a box and rose out of the box and the magician pulled a ring all the way around her body. I've also seen on where water "lifts" the assistant. Please PM me if you would like to talk in private:) Thank you.

Please try to read another thread, The Workshop, if you willing to build the illusion by yourself.
Or you can search the entire board with levitation as a keyword. You will find a lot of information for sure.

You have posted this in so many different sections in this site, I read it first in secret sessions, then grand illusion and now here.

Look at your post in Grand Illusion - I replied to it twice already.

The one in the secret sessions was moved. I first posted it here thinking it was the wrong one so then I posted it again in the secret session then it was moved to grand illusion.

I still can't spot the link between full levitations and comedy.

I think the levitation done with the assistant floating on fountains of water is/was a Doug Henning exclusive.

Levitations and comedy can go hand in hand if done right. I remember seeing someone do an Asrah and as he walked to the front of the stage to take his bow, the cloth was stuck down the back of his pants or something. He was standing at the front of the stage, bowing, while motioning to his nonexistant assistant for more applause. May have been Johnny Thompson as the Great Tomsoni, but I'm not sure.

Personally, I think Comedy works better in small undexpected doses.

So I really relate to what Jon Gallagher said.

I know comedy entertainers who make a living with only comedy. But I think an entertainer with other skills, like magic, can benefit from the insertion of comedy at certain points.

Just my opinion. But somethings are just too much work to make interesting and funny too. I see no problem with doing serious levitation, then inserting a comedy bit or line that fits, and going serious again. And so on.

Once when I was doing a mail bag escape, I got a particularly inept helper from the audience and it was taking forever to get the chains on me before I went into the bag. So fill so the audience stayed, I talked and joked about how I was hoping that once I got in the bag, I could break my previous record of 3 hours...And everyone laughed.... and I was then ready to astound them with an escape of of about 15 seconds.

I think that the combination of the comedy contrasted against the drama fulfilled in such a short time was key to an outstanding ovation! It was far more than I got from doing the routine where I am quickly chained and put in the bag, and take a reasonable time to escape - just so they don't think it is too easy. So now I build it into the routine. And I use a couple of lines like that one at different times. And consistently get very nice responses now.

A bit of comedy adds more than bit of spice.

There was (maybe still is) a book called Encylopedia of Suspension & levitations. Sold for about $50 at the time I got my copy. Not sure if it is still out there.

There is a goldmine of information in there. As well as how the levitations worked. That would be a good place to start as well.
