Ok guys, here I am calling out to all Workers.. I use to be a close-up walk around magician 10 plus years ago at the Rain Forrest Café in Jersey Gardens N.J. Since then I have been in the Air Force and my magic has been more of a Hobby then a carreer choice. Well now I'm looking to get back into the Walkaround, Close-up and Parlour type of magician. My concern other then the buisness side of things (BECAUSE IM LEARNING THAT AS WE SPEAK) is to learn more Parlour style magic. I want to step into Corporate and restaurant party type of effects. I mean I want to continue to be a Close up kinda guy but I feel that for these other venues I need to learn more of a larger audience type of routines. What advice do you guys have for me. Ranging from Buisness cards to what type of effects to aim for. If I'm being vague then I'm sorry ask and ill see if I can clarify.
Also those who have seen me on the Café for many years and have not seen me do any effects here is some examples of how I am when I am performing. http://www.youtube.com/user/paisa23?feature=mhee

Hi Wilder,
Three thoughts. First, magic is a huge, huge playground. I have come to believe that it is totally impossible to master even a tiny percent of the styles and types of magic out there, and it’s very important not to try to be all things to all people. Specialize as few areas as you can and still meet your goals. Next thought: Take it slow, learn only one piece and presentation at a time, add them slowly into an act and polish that act ‘till it shines. Think originality and creativity so you’re ahead of the pack. If you don’t do it extremely well don’t consider doing it semi or professionally. Third: I specialize in Parlor for a living, so I think I’ve learned the system. When you and the act area ready, book private parties for those you know— colleagues and friends of friends, for several months. Then after about six months begin to book Private Parties for people you don’t know— stranger clients, and specialize in that market for at least six-months. Next move on to the Restaurant/Banquet Room type celebrations, add those onto the (same) act for another six months or so. In other words, perform Parlor/Stage for about a year-and-a-half before thinking about booking in the corporate/business market and trade shows. By then you’ll have your comfort zone, chops, and a show they’ll buy and value. Last, as a PS, buy my book. <grin> Magically, Walt |

Walt, that is great advice and somewhere along the lines for what I wanted to do anyway. LOL what is your book about? I was told that a book by C.J. Johnson was a good read for the I was thinking about doing. So since just found out Wife is a prego, holding off on buying TOO much stuff. But I really do like the advice you have given me.

Paisa, congratulations on the newest addition to your family!
I must say though, for what you are looking to do, and as a seasoned theatrical persona myself, I highly recommend the "Tales of Enchantment" from Walt. It is a very thorough book that points out a lot of very helpful things, very useful things that most performers would never think of. It really is very helpful and a very good reference book to learn things from. |
