Hey everyone,
I’d be interested to know which impromptu routines get the strongest reactions for you. I don't care if they use gimmicks or involve set up, as long as they appear impromptu to the audience (i.e. a bill switch appears impromptu, even though you use a TT). my top routines: 1) bill switch to mismade bill 2) coins across 3) center tear I’m still workin on: 4) psychokinetic time 5) signed torn and restored sugar packet I look forward to hearing your thoughts!! |

It's a series of effects: I start with Premonition, then show the thought of card in Invisible Deck, the chosen card is then put on the palm and a cig on top of it is made to float, after which the card itself floats with no visible support, and ends with cig thru coin.
All the best! Dynamite

Bill switch
Pen Thru Bill Recapped Card Warp (although I think I will soon be doing it differently after viewing Vinny's one card method) 3/4 across Invisible deck is real close too, it is kind of hard to settle on just 5 effects. I will probably be including some type of dice routine into my top 5 when I feel more comfortable with my presentation. I would like to say ambitious card routine but I still don't have enough confidence in my overall routine yet (even though i have been playing around with this off and on for close to a year). GlenD

My favorite impromptu routines are as follows:
*Ring on string routine (I have done this with someone's showplace and their class ring, at their request) *Torn and Restored Bill *Spoon Bending *Center Tear Effects *2 in the hand, one in the pocket (sugar packets, coins, etc) *Most of my card routines, if someone hands me a deck of cards *Bending my finger backwards... a very interesting visual effect I have many more... I like them all. I think impromptu magic can be a blessing for magicians who are trying to make people believe that magic can happen anywhere. ---Malak |

Guys,
Impromptu means, with nothing on you. Use whatever is around, or use borrowed items. Invisible deck is not impromptu. TTs, IT, Sanadas, pen thrus, are not impromptu. Use a borrowed deck for card effects. Use borrowed coins, etc... I love Dean Dill's No Extras. Paul Cummin's Underhanded Coins Across, as well. A couple of quarters is great for a coin routine (see Greg Wilson). Recap is great, although I don't do it. I just haven't learned it. Anyway, nothing against all the stuff listed above, because there is some great stuff, but we're talking about impromptu. Eric Grossman

Some of the effects named above don't sound impromptu to me but in any case:

I guess I try and make all my magic look impromptu. I like my audiences to feel as if this is the first time I have ever done this. As if I could do anything in the world but I decided to do this to demonstrate my skill.
But I also do...

Maybe I am just ignorant (wouldn't be the first time) but does impromptu ALWAYS mean with borrowed items?
I realize it doesn't mean carrying around a case full of props. But a TT or "pen" (whether it's a normal Bic or Papermate or a special pen for pen thru bill) can not be considered impromptu just because you pulled it from your own pocket??? GlenD

Impromptu can be seemingly unprepared. Impromptu can be done with borrowed objects. Impromptu is an act of magic that seems out of the blue, the spur of the moment kind of thing.

Well I guess that everything that we do should appear impromptu to the spectator. But, for this forum, being that it is only for us, let's push ourselves a little.
For us, truly impromptu should mean unprepared. You're right that it shouldn't absolutely mean borrowed objects, but how about not using any magic props? What would you do if you didn't have the usual with you, the things that we normally carry? Remember guys, this is our place to learn, so let's step outside the box a little. Here's a list: Sponge balls with napkins Coin routine with common change No Extras by Dean Dill Recap (I'll learn it) Paper ball over the head (Slydini) Let's also pretend that there doesn't happen to be a deck of cards around, either. That would make it too easy for us. Thanks for the indulgence. Eric Grossman

Dave, who posted this forum, said that he didn't care if the routine took set up as long as it looked impromtu to the audience.
