Anyone tried thid idea: have a assistant secretly offstage?
Instead of the 2 kids plus the 'wardrobe mistress'that come up on to the stage? |

Jim Gerrish's "Star Warts" from his Kid Show Magic section on my site is also of this type, but gets the performer and a parent involved along with the kids using a Star Wars theme.

Spellbinder,
I just bought "Star Warts" with paypal but haven't gotten anything. Is it going to be mailed to me or emailed? I think it was emailed in the past. Thanks! Jim

A very good description of this trick from David Ginn is in his book "Partly Unpublished" pages 22 - 26.
Don´t know for sure, but if I remember it right in the book Kidbiz there wasn´t anything about it. The illusion is also described in “The Tarbell Course in Magic” Volume 3 pages 405-408. |

There is also an assistant off-stage in the original version so I assume you mean having a hidden child assistant also?
It would certainly make the effect more direct and less confusing but on the otherhand I'd feel kind of sorry for the poor urchin selected to play an integral role in the trick and doesn't so much as get acknowledged onstage. |

In the original Grant version, the "wardrobe mistress" was called back on stage to watch the play and took a bow with the others, so no one was left out. Star Warts, which I trust JamesinLA has received by now, also ends with a curtain call for all. The funny part of Jim Gerrish's routine (for me, anyway) is the way the characters are different heights and grow or shrink during the play to match the plot.

That's exactly my point as he is looking to drop the wardrobe mistress therefore there will be an uncredited child.
Is there a wardrobve mistress in Jim's routine? |

He's talking about replacing the wardrobe mistress with his own professional assistant. No harm done.
In answer to your question, Jim's "Star Warts" version has TWO wardrobe assistants from the audience, a child (usually, but not necessarily, a girl) and her mother. Both are incorporated into the stage action and all end up on stage after it is revealed that NO ONE (including the magician) is whom the audience thinks they are. They all take bows.

It can be done, but to explain it further would reveal secrets. If this is something you would like to pursue in private, please do so.

He said an off-stage assistant not a replacement wardrobe mistress. I was just trying to help out but nobody seems to be making any sense.

I've done the trick for years. The illusion works well so long you keep it fast. The costumes have to go on and off quickly. I have slit the back of each costume and added magnets so the snap on quickly. I use an assistant to play wardrobe mistress when possible it speeds things up. If I have to I'll use a third kid to play wardrobe mistress.
