Hey- I'm enrolled in the Chavez Studio of Magic at home study course. I've sent videos for critique but have never received a response. I've also tried emailing to no avail. Anyone else enrolled in the at home program? Just curious if I have the wrong mailing address and email address.

Thanks!

That seems strange. I don't know who is in charge of it, but I think you should try contacting Dale Salwak. Here is his contact number: salwak@roadrunner.com

Between the two studios, Dale Salwak (www.dalesalwak.com/Chavezstudio.html) is the only one who offers and does the home study course. The branch in the midwest (www.chavezcollegeofmagic.com)is personal instruction only.

It could be that Dale is out of town - it is summertime.

I took this course almost 40 years ago. I am curious, do they still use the photos of Marian Chavez explaining the sleights?

Brad!

Yes, it is the same photos. The original course was actually printed materials without the photos. You had to glue the pictures in yourself into the proper spots. From there printings were made from that.

A little extra fact - the pictures were taken by Ben Chavez - photography was his hobby and it was a perfect fit of hobby and occupation.

Even though the The Chavez Course is co-owened between Chris Jakway and Dale Salwak - The two studios are independent of each other. It is pretty much the same set up when it was Neil Foster and Dale Salwak.

Signor Blitz, I still have the original course books. The photos were separately glued onto the printed pages, as you said. They came that way (I didn't have to glue them in myself, luckily). Copying technology has certainly advanced in the last forty years. I can still recall, from elementary school, the distinct smell of the mimeographed page. Ahh!
It's interesting that they have never updated the photos for the course. But then again, why should they? The photos of Mrs. Chavez were quite effective in teaching the various sleights, although her June Cleaver-esque outfits looked dated, even back then.

YES! A good wiff from a freshly mimeographed exam made the test not so bad - LOL!

The original copy of the course is the best. The later copies were made from a copy of the original and then a copy of a copy. This resultedin very poor photos. There was a major magic shop owner in Chicago that was notorious for selling you a photo copy of his original copy.

Needless to say that he was tracked down and his copy was taken away from him - and all I will add that he was a big cry baby for being held acountable for his actions - LOL

Every so often "old timers" sell their copy of the course. I always laugh to myself - they forgot the pledge that the signed way back when stating that they promise not to sell their course publicly. It is to be returneed back to the studio - and I know that the midwest studio will give you a fair price for your set of instructions - but being the 21st entury there is typically NO HONOR anymore - LOL

As for updating the materials. Dale Salak does what he does on the east coast (the two studios are independent of each other). The midwest studio has a different view. Sure you can learn the material from the written course but Neil Foster equated it to art. It is much like learning how to be a sculpturer. It is a very hard thing to master if given a chunck of marbel, a chisle and printed instructions. To master it - you need a master there to guide you through the process.

The traditional printed materials has all the information you need - and is a great reference source to refer back to (after finishing the course) but a challenge to learn from as an only source. So there has never been a real need to revise and update. I know the midwest studio has a post-graduate course (that is by invitation only) that includes exclusive materials. These extras are from the working repertuar of from Ben (and Marion) Chavez, Neil Foster, Chris Jakway and Larry Wirtz.

As for Marion's "June Clever" dress - it is a refreshing reminder to a simpler time - (a very happy LOL)

Thanks for the post!
