Why is it that I've logged onto the Café and the first two threads that I read are full of negativity and silly playground squabbling?
Why can't we all just encourage and help each other along? It's not just here but constant negative attitudes and the whole 'my way is the only way' mentality is getting very boring. Perhaps it's just a case of the green eyed monster but why oh why can't we just behappy for people who do well and encourage each other. If someone does something or releases something that we don't like then isn't it better to be constructive about it rather that just shoot it down in flames, we all know that not everything suits everyone.

Ego and jealousy!
There are two ways of getting ahead in life. One is to put all your effort in to bettering yourself, the other is to put your energy into putting everyone else down so you feel ahead of everyone else. It seems most would rather do the latter. If that's what they want to do, lets leave them to it. We'll allow them to stay on 'here' bickering and moaning while we go out and perform and make lots of money . Little do they know that by spending their time on here feeling all grown up and knowledgable, they are completely lacking the opporunity to learn the skills required to actually engage people properly and professionally in the real world. Ironically, if you look at 'The Magic Café' banner at the top let of your screen, if the 'F' in 'Cafe' was tunred upside down, it would look like the letter 'G' ... how fitting . Much love! Col.

I think it may be due to the two distinct personality types that I think are drawn to mentalism:
-Those who are in it to entertain -Those who are in it to make themselves feel superior to others The latter type is pictured below getting ready to respond to a post reading, "Hi! I saw a cool mentalism effect on TV and I'd like to know how I could go about learning it." |

What I have seen here:
1. Seems if a person with a low post count in the Café posts a question, they are usually hammered as a newbie, a troll, ridiculed for asking about an effect, etc 2. If someone posts a negative review about a product or simply says the product is not for them they are harshly attacked by the creator, friends of the creator, people who like the effect, etc. 3. Many here seem to interpret a person's intent, emotion, and so much more based on their post. That in itself is an amazing mentalist feat. 4. Some Hi-jack threads or post off topic humor/sarcasm that does nothing to help out in anyway. These are, simply opinions, and everyone has one. Neither right or wrong just a statement |

I agree Rebecca. And negativity breeds negativity. If I see someone being just plain mean to someone for no reason other than to make themselves feel better it annoys me so much that I end up making a negative comment to that person, and so it goes with many others who are generally positive happy people. There are some great people posting on this forum and it only takes one or two idiots to bring the whole tone down. What really gets me are the armchair mentalists who buy a few DVDs, think they actually know something, and then come here criticising real working pros. It's a fantasy world they live in where they are some kind of expert on mentalism when in fact they know little or nothing about performing to real people.
All the best Sean |

If I had to change two things about the Café they would be:
1. Give me the ability to move things from Penny to Inner Thoughts, seriously what is Labco doing advertising here? 2. Get rid of the attitude whereby an argument is won, not by reason or thoughtful points, but by one person stating that they make more money than the other. I've noticed almost every rich Mentalist doing it at this point, including Bob Cassidy, Ken Dye and Colin. It depresses me so much, because it reminds me of my father talking to me as a child; and of him trying to justify all the cruel and unjust things people did to make money - actions I could never understand. So Becky I disagree with you. Polite manners are useless to me, as I don't understand them, I just wish people would begin trying to follow those two rules.
I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.

If polite manners are useless to you, then you may want to consider getting out more. -rob |

It's not to do with money Thomas, it's to do with experience. Bob Cassidy has been doing Mentalism WELL, longer than anyone else alive. When he speaks, we should all listen! Not just out of respect, but because we all have much to learn!
...Here's to never stopping learning or having respect for others! Col.

Ive been here about a year now, and, yes I have allways thought that rebbeca. When I was a newbie I almost went off going any further because of some comments (i think you are also right Will4guzz) luckily I stayed with it and now am getting paid gigs. BUT the attitude here does sometimes stink to be honest and ego seems to play a big part. Also the fact that someone atcally wastes five minuites of there life putting a post up against some one elses telling them 'there so far behind on this effect' where have you been' don't post that here'....and the list goes on.
There are many here though who have been very helpfull to people like me, on these posts and there own pm's to me. Was gonna keep quiet but seeing as the subject was brought up, I just though I would let some of you know whats its like to the likes'of me'an outsider and now someone who feels part of all this too. why waste time being nasty to one and another? well, said it! |

I would love to be tactful and polite, but its not in my nature. Thankfully it makes me excellent at being honest instead
And agreed, Bob is extremely experianced I read his posts a lot. But even he resorts to the "Money" argument on occasions. I use the word "rich" because its easier to spell than "financially successful" If our job is to make money then I suggest we all become layers, if it is to entertain then I suggest we stop judging people from that aspect.

The basic tool for the manipulation of reality is the manipulation of words. If you can control the meaning of words, you can control the people who must use the words.

I recently had an interview for the magic circle, and to be honest I'm amazed I got through as well as I did, I managed to sit the whole time next to a guy who I knew was the single most boring performer I had ever seen in my life and I didn't say anything Politeness is generally speaking, just another word for keeping your mouth shut.

If someone is rude and ignorant I'll have nothing to do with them. I don't care what the reason is for their behaviour. I'll spend my time with people with whom it is a pleasure to converse. I still don't have to agree with them, I hasten to add!
I think that internet forums can be very useful and entertaining. I have to say, though, that the most valuable times I've spent discussing mentalism have been in person, face to face with performers and even hobbyists. Late one evening earlier this week I spent a delightful time working through some ideas with a gentleman whose name will be familiar to you all. In one hour we'd got more done than if I'd spent a week on a forum asking questions and discussing ideas. Part of this is because discussing secret things is a private matter, and being able to see things happening when working on performance is rather handy, too The lack of 'noise' from the rude and ignorant definitely helped too. |

Bob Cassidy is rich? I hadn't realized this. Bob, would it be possible to bother you for a loan? You've given me plenty of knowledge and experience which has been great, but now I'm going for the money.

Let us also remember that disagreeing with someone does not mean you're being rude or negative.
Not going along with the status quo of the Magic Café is not being rude or negative. Expressing an opinion about a show that exposes magic is not being rude or negative. Too many people use the Café as a place to get their ego stroked or tout their latest product instead of engaging in thoughtful, meaningful conversation. Conversations and debates do not mean someone must win or lose. It is simply a way of exploring new ideas and perspectives. |
