I'm building a routine where I would like to vanish a very small assistant. Like, 8 years old small. (My daughter) - the routine would end with me embracing her in a large robe or similar garment, and when it is reopened she has vanished.
Where do I start looking? |

A M****r Box or table could work also.

I'm trying to create something where she doesn't get in a box. She will be appearing from a dollhouse earlier in the routine. I was thinking of even rigging something on my back she could climb into, concealed by the folds in the robe. It will be reopened, but then there is something replacing her that she "transformed" into, that I am holding.

A vanish is much harder than a production as the audience will seek a solution and start looking for an answer as there is nothing to captivate their attention and keep them from it. The problem is that you have a blank slate so anything is possible. Again, with a vanish you want to end as clean as possible but a lot depends on where you're doing the effect.
If it's at a specific venue, be creative and look for natural hides or solutions that exist in the room itself. If it is to go in your show that moves, you'll need something more self contained that you can travel with. In starting to research solutions, you have to ask, is there a backdrop, what are the sight lines, is it an elevated stage, do you have full control of the lighting and many other factors. You can always use a sledgehammer and construct a portable platform that will handle the vanish but that is a pretty heavy handed approach! The Tom Palmer "Zombie Girl" vanish is a very elegant solution for small venues you might investigate. BA is a very easy possibility if all of the conditions are right but can be restrictive in many situations. Without knowing your market and needs. its hard to narrow down. Hopefully as you define your market and venues the best solution will present itself to you. My own belief is that determining the best solution is a subtractive process much like sculpting in stone. It is reported that when Michelangelo was asked how he sculpted the "David" statue, he replied, "I simply took away everything that wasn't David." Simply remove everything that isn't best solution and what is left at the end will be perfect!

Just thinking out loud here...In the small-child appearance illusion, "Sacred", you can make a small child appear (DUH!). I wonder if it can be done in reverse, and used to vanish a child? The creator of that effect, Peter Loughran, is here on the Café. Perhaps he will answer.

Mike, I actully thought about Sacred but again it's a fun production but kind of a guilty method for a vanish. It could work if you just stood there motionless and they closed the curtain in a black out but otherwise could be tough.

Closing motionless might actually be an option.
After the vanish, I end up holding an inanimate object that the girl is implied to have transformed into, and then we fade out. |

Sacred, imo, is great for the appearance, but the vanish would not be strong.

Randy...after I thought it through, I came to the same conclusion. That's why they call it brainstorming.
I guess if we fling enough pooh against the wall, SOMETHING is bound to stick!

Thanks for the help on thinking this through. I had a fragment of a memory of hearing about a child sized appearance some time ago, and it was definitely Sacred now that I see it again.
I actually think that instead of the dollhouse concept, I will use sacred for the appearance and decide whether or not I need the vanish in the plot. It's an evolving routine. My daughter is turning 8 soon, and we now have some performing experience together. I am really hoping to create something beautiful with this one. I love the dollhouse for an affordable illusion, but having it on stage just screams "someone is going to pop out of this." Sacred looks to be a real winner for an unexpected appearance. The only question that remains, is how much moving around can I do before the actual appearance? I would be onstage doing other manipulation for a couple of minutes before the appearance. |

From what little I know or have seen of this illusion, it might be better used as you enter the stage. Try looking at the member list here at the Café and finding the creator, Peter Laughran. He has been most approachable in the past.

You can't really do too much on stage if you are using Sacred, it is basically come on from the wings, put out the chair(if you us that aspect of it, then BANG do the appearance, much more than that and I think there is risk of exposure, and you only have one hand free anyhow as the other one is holding the curtain...

Hey guys. Great discussion. I'm the creator of Sacred and Peter manufactures, markets and distributes for me. I have to agree with the posts saying that Sacred is much more striking as an appearance than a vanish and was designed for that. However, in doing my research for this effect, Dunninger did a "midget vanish" using an outdated but "in the ballpark" method, but different material and setup. So it "could" be done, but I would not recommend it with the way Sacred is currently designed. Ray is spot on with the audience "searching" for a solution for a vanish, making it less of a surprise.
As for the Rev's question about mobility, it depends really on the size of your kid in terms of the mobility that you have. Randy is correct that you have one hand on the curtain, so you have one hand free. It is designed as a walk out from the wing, whip the cloth out and a kid instantly appears. But there could be some delay if you had something interesting that you could do with the other hand. A flaming torch, some card manipulations as you are walking to center stage, a streamer changing to a cane, etc. might be ok as long as it is something you are doing with one hand, and you can do it while walking to center stage. Once stopped, you can finish up the bit, but I wouldn't burn too long in that position for a few reasons that will become apparent when working with the illusion. If you are working with Sacred, feel free to PM me for more help. Good luck Rev. Let us know how the act progresses!

"I'm the creator of Sacred" - isn't this a old principle? (found in some of the old magic books)

Scott, I'll PM you with the details of what I'm trying to put together. Appreciate your insights.
Tristan, plenty of new routines have old principles. In fact I'd say most of them do. Scott didn't claim to invent appearances, just this version. |

I use Adrian Soler's "Ghost Illusion". Works well for me. It is a zombie type of vanish. No boxes.

I think the big questions here is, do you do this in ONE place or do you plan on traveling it? If traveling it, what type of venues will you be using and what are their limitations? I have an amazingly simple vanish I use and I think would work, but I would need to know those answers to see if it's a fit.
