Thing is, most of what makes my random expenditures a waste is that the props turned out to be largely cheap and junky so not really anything worth passing on. I will eventually weed through my DVD collection and offer to make trades, though. I don't need more DVDs, but more silks, a spare set of rings, better billiard balls, costume bits, and so on would be really good. Just duplicates of things I already have or want to expand slightly. I can't afford to buy anything for a while. Just had a veterinary bill for a stray dog we rescued a couple of weeks ago - my fun budget for the next 8 months or so is gone. Literally 8 months of fun budget for a dog that we fell in love with and it turns out we can't keep because the upkeep will be beyond our means. (Don't worry, we managed to get her placed today with another person who can manage the bills. But we are still out a lot.)
However, this makes it a lot simpler to take my own advice and concentrate on just what I already have rather than continuing to buy DVDs or props that won't ever be part of what I do. I could script hours of acts from Mark Wilson and Tarbell and use no more than I have already or can make myself. What I'm going to do is refine what I have and create a solid performance that I can use in an all-purpose situation. -Patrick |

Given all your advice, I feel I am lucky to be starting during the time of the internet - firstly I get access to all these conversations and advice, and secondly I can imagine that if I'd started by walking into a bricks and mortar magic shop, I would probably have adopted the "child in a sweet shop" approach and ended up with an awful lot of stuff I wouldn't have needed. At the moment I have bought RRTCM and bobo's coin book (am still at the start of the card book and haven't opened the coin book yet), 2 packs of bicycle cards and an invisible deck (I had that performed on me at a wedding and thought it was brilliant, so ordered it the other day - I must say now I think it's even more brilliant - and I remember how well I fell for it and how cool it seemed...). I think I am going to leave all purchasing there until I am better at card handling.

Bobo's is a fantastic book, I have done a bit of coin magic but card magic is where my heart is. If you are thinking of getting a coin DVD later on then I can recommend David Roth's DVDs

Jamie - I hope your study is going well. I'd like to humbly add a response to your question. As you continue to learn the basics of magic, begin developing your personal POV of the relationship between what you're doing and the effect it is having on your audience. How do you want to be perceived? (edgy, funny, mysterious, etc.) Once you start videoing yourself, ask yourself if this is coming through in your performance. If something else is shining through instead of what you originally intended, perhaps that's the POV / persona that you should develop.

Don't know if this will be of interest to anyone here - but you can see me doing some of the items from my DVD set if you go to http://www.youtube.com/harrylorayneonvideo There are about 34 items to choose from, or to see. Best - HL.

Sagan: v useful advice - I will definitely bear it in mind. Thanks for reading this thread after so long!
Mr Lorayne: I've already been looking at your YouTube videos, and reading a copy of close-up card magic a friend has lent me. Both are very inspiring and useful. I like your style of card magic, especially the use of borrowed decks, that's exactly what I will aim at learning. I was planning (once I've spent a bit more time on RRTCM and CUCM) to perhaps get your classic collection vol 1? If it's ok I'll get in touch with you in the next few weeks? Thanks for taking an interest And also thanks o sagan. Cheers J |

Patrick;
That's a great run-down of advice. I'm pleased to say I'm already doing most of what you suggest... I, too, get bored repeating and repeating, although it's necessary to build the skill-set. My basic routine through the day is research, read, practice and learn at least one new trick a day. Keeps things fresh and sets me a goal that becomes progressively harder. If I start to get frustrated or "over-work" a trick, I put it aside for a full day before going back. By that time, I've relaxed and I'm ready to tackle it fresh. I also find that I may have thought of a variation or subtlety that makes things easier on me and gives the trick more impact.
