I'm about to start building a Palanquin....using Osborne plans. A couple of questions: for any of you that have built one, any problems you might have run into? And also, has anyone on here built one using stretch lycra instead of the standard wood tr.ps?

You don't' want lycra for that.
I performed this trick for Paul in his amusment park shows for a full season. the leg trap was 3/8 or 1/2 ply... but the side that becomes the roof was only 1/4 if I'm not mistaken.it's WAY better if that's not lycra or a roller shade. it got so hot we used to put a big bowl of ice in it before the show. AHHH summer in Rhode Island!!!! I did make several improvements to it... to make it easier to perform outside... and I have a suggestion that will make it much harder to build...but make it a much better prop.. PM ME. |

I’m a designer by trade and I have a very high-end CAD system. I have modeled many Illusions in 3D from the many plans and books available out there and a few of my own. It’s really amazing how much you can find when you have a full 3D model of all the parts and pieces assembled. You can find all the areas where it can be improved and I have found quite a few. Most importantly you find all the places where there is something missing or a flawed area in the design without making a full-size prototype. I’ve done this with a Palaquin as well and made a bunch of modifications and improvements that not only allow the apparatus to be assembled by one person in about 15 minutes but also allows the curtain, at the end of the performance, to be drawn to either side. It comes apart easily and packs much smaller than others too. I'd be interested in hearing about some of the tweaks you've made to the Palaquin.
