Does or has anyone used this effect for table hopping/strolling? I have had one of these for several years now and occasioally perform it for small groups with pretty good reactions. It requires no reset so from that perspective it would be ideal for table hopping. What is required is a decent presentation and handling. Anyone previously or currently using this effect and care to elaborate?

It's a box you keep your Ching Lings in, Pete. Geez...everyone knows THAT.

Ching Ling Coin Box hit the big auction site and the online magic stores several years ago. It is basically a coin penetrating a piece of glass that is inside a box. Another version of Coin of the Realm.

Was that a Viking Mfg. product, or did they ever making something like it? It sounds very familiar to me, being mostly a coin worker. Coin of the Realm is pretty good, but I have seen better versions in the past - though I never used any of them.

I believe the Ching Ling Coin Box is an imported Lippincott Box with a slit cut in the lid and the bottom to accomodate a coin. Anyone own one who can confirm...?

Yes that is a good description of it. I have developed a nice handling that allows the coin to be left sitting on edge and untouched in the slot ("supposedly" on the glass) and at the magic word command of a spectator then and only then does the coin drop through without me doing anything (that they can detect anyways). If I had a digital video camcorder I could put up a youtube demo of how it looks, I might try doing a quick recording using my phone if anyone interested.

Ok, I can't obviously say I am an experienced magic trick video maker but here is a short and crude vid (taken today with my phone and the help of a friend) of this effect. Could possibly have zoomed in closer but it is what it is...

Thanks for the video Glen. Pretty good for a phone camera! I remember this one now, and I have seen another effect recently, new(er) to market, that is very similar to that. This would be a good piece for walkaround in a restaurant, but you should try and justify it in some way, such as storing/carrying some small props inside. You would obviously want to watch your angles with this as well.

You're welcome guys. I typically keep this in my close-up case and perform it occasionally. It would be a literal pain to carry this in your pocket, so you would want a pouch, extra bag or whatever. There is a little more to my normal presentation but I was trying to keep the time to around a minute or so due to my equipment limitations. I agree abuot the angle concern and you kind of need to know if you're too surrounded or not, has'nt been a problem for me so far. It seems the answer to my original question is a no! That's cool, I will give it a go next time I am doing a strolling gig. I was thinking of producing the half dollar, via the "coin to phone" app, sort of like a coin from phone and then go into the box effect.

I have the Viking Lippincott Box ($35.00) and the Ching Ling Box is basically The Lippincott Box with a slot cut through the top and bottom. Using a piece of plexiglass instead of real glass. The trick known as STEEL BALL THRU GLASS is the same thing only with a round hole cut in the top and bottom with a steel ball bearing. The piece of plastic is somewhat outside the box with the flap open slightly so the ball can pass through the top and bottom. Just before you hand it to the spectator you tilt the box so the plastic piece covers the bottom and shut the side flap all in one movement.

It's a David Roth idea (Coins through mini table). Those on ebay are obvious knock-offs.
I suggest you pay your dues and buy the book. http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S8244
