Hi all,
I am presently watching Eugene Burger's 'A Magical Vision'. Really enjoying it. At about 25 mins in Eugene does an effect with 2 jumbo cards which I think is a card warp effect, he was left completely clean and his presentation and patter were immaculate! Something along the lines of a torture victim during the Spanish inquisition! Mentalism fans (and anyone with any common sense!) probably know what I am going to ask.....what is the effect called and where can I find it? I would love to learn and perform this. Hope somebody can point me in the right direction, and I hope I've posted this in the right section! Many thanks! |

Yes, this is Roy Walton's card warp (which as a plot was inspired by Jeff Busby's Into the 4th Dimension manuscript done with jumbo cards. The patter about the Spanish Inquisition is original to Eugene Burger. Card warp was originally released as a manuscript, but is now taught, along with numerous variations in a variety of forms. The Spanish inquisition patter I wouldn't touch without getting permission from Eugene Burger, and even then I wouldn't touch it because (a) it is almost synonymous with Burger, and anyone else using it is likely to be seen as an imitator; (b) I prefer to perform original patter; and (c)I doubt I could do it as well as Burger anyway (and the few attempts I have seen by magicians to imitate Burger have been vastly inferior to the original).
Card Warp is a great effect to have in your repertoire. Don't ignore the variations out there. For instance there are versions where the cards are stapled, and versions where a card is used in conjunction with a dollar bill (I quite like Mike Close's version of this), and card warps with different endings then the original. Lots of possibilities to be had out there. Work up your own presentation for it and go for it. Good Luck. |

I had no idea card wrap could be done with jumbo cards. I have to look into this.

Thanks for the tips....I loved Eugene Burger's patter and although I wouldn't copy it outright it has inspired me with a couple of ideas regarding the presentation! I have Alakazam's Phantasm which is a variation on the Card Warp plot apparentley, but I think after seeing both I much prefer this original one (tho I did think Phantasm very good still!) So the one Eugene performs is definitely the original Roy Walton version yes? Cos that is what I am gonna hunt down!
Leland> The cards used were not *JUMBO* as such but definitely BIG! About 4x the size of a regular card. I was under the impression that JUMBOs were much bigger, I'm sure somebody will be able to clarify this! Thanks again. |

There is indeed a mid size card that is somewhere in between standard and jumbo. I think it's a European brand, but I don't recall the name.

Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.

Well said. Burger's presentation of this classic is nothing short of brilliant. I remember seeing it for the first time and having one of those "why didn't I think of this" moments. Absolutely perfect. Eugene explained how he came up with the Spanish Inquisition script for his card warp presentation, I think it was in his book The Experience of Magic. He said he had the opening line about the history of religion being told with a deck of cards for many years but wasn't sure what to do with it. Then one day the line came together with the effect and he ended up with his Card Warp presentation. It really is an interesting story because he had that line for years and just held onto it until he found the best place to use it. If this isn't is a good argument for keeping a journal of your original ideas I don't know what is. |
