Thomas,
Like all good Mentalism, less is more. Similarly, when you moisturize remember less is more. And, like when tanning, you must remove your socks before applying product to your legs, mate. The moist video was amusing but always remember..... M.O.I.S.T: Moisturize Only If Sockless, Thanks. :)
Blessings on thee, little man,

Thank you for answering me straight, calling out the issues that I need to work on and giving me good ideas on how to move forward. I appreciate the time you put into creating the video! Ive had several folks PM me and even call me about this post! I was very happy to see so many folks actually wanting to help. Thank you to all of you who did that and gave me sound advice. Ive begun studying the material that has been recommended to me by some well respected folks here and I'm exicted to see where my routines will develop from here. |

Also Dallas, I think you should be congratulated on your own personal achievements outside of magic.
I'm sure with the same determination and focus applied to your magic/mentalism go far.

You are very welcome Dallas

I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.
Does anyone else find the term "Special User" to be a bit condescending? |

Hey Dallas,
Great effects you are using! It doesn't matter what you do, it's how you do it. People come to their own conclusions about you, it's not like you can simply tell them "THIS IS MENTALISM, NOT MAGIC, OK?!?!" No matter what you do, some will call it "magic". IMO, who cares! As long as they are not onto the true method it's a win. As long as you aren't too serious in your act (ie: "concentrating" too hard for effects and winding up appearing constipated), you can get away with a lot of stuff. The KEY is to appeal to both the skeptics and the believers at the same time. For me personally, I preface everything with something about the "power of illusion"; effectively "tipping my hat" to the skeptics. It sounds like you are doing a great job of dodging bullets using dual reality. Good job! You never know what someone has witnessed. They may have seen nothing at all. Never admit defeat to the whole group. Sometimes you only need to manipulate one person, the "key witness". You can always whisper in their ear. You can buy some time misdirection by asking for a round of applause for his efforts. You can ignore the person if they are not being vocal. You can also assign them a task if you want to continue with other effects. Ask the skeptic to go get you something from the bar, or give them something to do. These are all just options that can be used depending on the person and situation. The key is to know when you are dealing with a "soft" screw up or a "hard" one. For hard screw ups, all you can do is turn it into a joke while maintaining your confidence. RE: Second question For walkaround magic it's up to you. If you have to fill 2 hours with only 50 people in the room, you will probably want to have a few different sets. Go around with the first set (2-3 tricks), then come back later with some even better tricks for your second pass. - SeVryn |

Ok - I did not read this entire thread so some of this may be redundant, but I did watch the video - pretty cool! I consider myself a "mentalist", but I could give a toss what ANYONE else thinks a "mentalist" should be. This is your art, and yours to define.
Personally, I don't do ANYTHING that looks like it could be or might be or sorta kinda may be accomplished via slieght of hand. I do love soh, and I love and practice card magic, but I do not use cards in my "professional" routines (nothing wrong with it, I just choose not to). Getting "busted" is good if you want to be convincing. I don't mean having your methods transparent, I mean missing. I have lots of parts of my routines where an "organic" miss may very well happen...I hope it does, because it builds up to an even greater "hit". What I do are "experiments", the very nature of "experiments" are that they require cooperation and they sometimes fail...the "magic" is that my "experiments" succeed with an astounding rate of success...but not 100% - how could they? As far as "how much?" - I think the answer must be very personal to you. I will perform without being paid - if asked nicely, twice. I will do one or two effects and that's it. However, that is just me. As long as people are being entertained and you are not boring them or you are getting the feeling that they would rather be doing something else, then go for as long as you are comfortable and your audience is engaged. Performing for "real people", "under fire" is the only way to get good.
