Who is entitled or qualified to speak on behalf of his or her "people"? That's the $64,000 dollar question. The whole Indian/Native American thing in the United States is an example. Some "Native Americans" don't like the term "Indian". Even some "Native Americans" whose own Tribes and Tribal leaders use the term "Indian" synonymously with "Native" or "Native American" in all thier official writings, and to describe themselves. Now, some "Native Americans" are ok with the term "Indian" if they are being addressed as such by another "Indian", but if a "Paleface" refers to them as an "Indian" they are quick to correct the "White Devil". And of course in Canada many "Indians/Natives/Eskimos" prefer the term "Aboriginal" or "Aboriginal Peoples". So it can be kind of tricky keeping up and not offending people before you've had to chance to ask them what the prefer to be called individually. Also, there are times when a term has to be used in an offical capacity that someone within the group isn't going to like. That can be a problem. Then of course you have to worry about the people who take offense on behalf of someone, even if they aren't a part of that group and are not personally affected by the term in use. They can be the hardest to please of all. |

I've never personally met an Indian who liked being called "Native American" but I've seen them on TV.
Nobody liked the "you pick" joke? Then it's out of the act!

I add the "American" to the "Indian" to avoid having to argue with the rich white middle aged hippies who care about that stuff.
My friends who actually are Indians are fine with just the one word. Bear in mind, I know they don't speak for all Indians, but I only have direct experience with what they prefer.
