Hello there,
I thought maybe some of you might know what I am looking for. Performing much more on stage than in close-up situations, I wish to explore in a deeper way stage manipulation. I feel like I only scrape the surface of it when I practice my cards skills, rings skills, dancing cane skills... I am looking for some sort of "bible" book on manipulation, like what the bobo is to coin magic. I wish to read about theories regarding attention, misdirection, hand positioning, postures to adopt, movements of the body... as well as a large collection of various specific moves. I heard about a "string" theory that can help positioning your arms and hands during the act and this is exactly the sort of subject I want to read about. Do you know such book ? Thanks a lot for your help ! TAB |

There is no such book on manipulation magic. Just to hard to write on the moves. The closest book would be the Chavez Mail Order course in Manipulation Magic. No theory in the course, just the proper way to position yourself when in front of an audience.
Inquire here: http://www.dalesalwak.com/Chavezstudio.html This was the only way to learn stage manipulations until the Jeff McBride videos, but he does not cover any of the way to present manipulations, only the moves. |

You may want to consider also the book "Magic and Showmanship a Handbook for Conjurers" by Henning Helms.

I've always thought that Bill Tarr's book "Now You See It, Now You Don't!: Lessons in Sleight of Hand " was a good book to start with. I have given copies to some of the younger magic guys who have expressed an interest in manipulation magic. It does address manipulation magic from a stand up point of view.
Just my 2 cents and that's probably what it's worth. |

Juan Tamariz goes into a little of this subject in his book "5Points..."
Generally speaking, most magic books tend to isolate the training of the hands as if they were distinct from the body and overall corporal image. This is a rather dated viewpoint. For that reason, sometimes a good book on mime will help you see how the hands should integrate with the rest of your body. For a book that addresses the overall view of manipulation in it's various forms: Henry hay's "Amateur Magicians Handbook" Regards- JNeal

Thanks a lot for all your replies, I'll look up for these books, see if they fit.
@Darkwing : Is this a book for beginners ? If so, this is not what I'm looking for really, I'm looking for books that talk about theories in manipulation, assuming that you are already familiar with sleight of hand. Another example of what kind of ideas I wish to find is Losander's levitation rules (object moving = still hands, etc...) |

Arthur Buckley's "Principles and Deceptions" is a mix of theory and manipulation with coins, cards and balls.

The fact that you are asking a question about "theories regarding attention, misdirection, hand positioning, postures to adopt, movements of the body..." in a forum devoted to stage manipulation shows some degree of insight. The three Lewis Ganson _Routined Manipulations_ books do a great job of addressing the theory of magic in general and manipulation in particular, especially Chapter 1 which is titled "Presentation of Manipulation."
John Booth's _Forging Ahead in Magic_ is a classic. I return again and again to the first two chapters of Henry Hay's _Amateur Magician's Handbook_: 1) The Magic State of Mind, and 2) Hard Easy Tricks and Easy Hard Tricks, One of Hay's most perceptive comments is from page 11: -----begin quote----- Some notion, at least, of magical acting can be taught in a book; but it takes time to sink in. The time required to memorize a self-working trick is not enough. The time required to learn a fairly simple sleight (a manual artifice) probably will be enough for you to absorb the acting that goes with it. -----end quote----- In the late 1980's/early 1990's there was a series of articles in _GENII_ by Ray Pierce called "Pansophical Productions" that went into considerable detail on magic theory. I always felt that the series should have been collected and published in book form. ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

Another vote here for the Ganson and Hay books mentioned. Also, Geoffrey Buckingham's "It's Easier Than You Think" is very good for loading and stealing.
These will take you a long way down the road. Once you get to a certain point though, personal instruction is the way to go. |

Another good book on manipulation and silks is Ade Duval's Silken Sorcerer. Great book about a great performer.
Also the best book on Coin Manipulation is "Modern Art of Coin Manipulation" by Ron McMillan from England. He explains his act in minute detail. Truly wonderful book. |
