For the best that money can buy, from one of the nicest guys around, look up Dean Dill. I think that you can find him at:

The Dill stuff is great, but it's also the priciest out there.

You can find a huge collection of pads and tables, in Pattrick's magical services, here:
www.pmsmagic.com I hope it helps. |

I like John Cornelius' "Shufflemat" which folds in half so that it fits nicely into a jacket breast pocket. For walk-around work, it's great. It also holds business cards.

Why do so many seem so expensive?

I use a mat that I bought from a computer store for around $8 (like a oversized 11x17 mouse pad).

Here is a source for the Gibson pad.
Eddie's has the Apollo pad: M1045, CLOSE UP PAD, APOLLO 16"x23", $29.95. And there was another thread here about why some feel "magician's" pads are better than mouse pads, such as those from CompUSA. Good luck in your search. Make do with what you can afford but remember that magic can be an expensive hobby especially when you go for quality props. Steve H

Thanks. From all these choices which do you think is the best if I am willing to spend $25-30...I'm thinking Apollo.

I realize the close-up pads aren't cheap. I spent HOURS trying to find a way to save some $$ and make my own and have come full circle to buying a "real" close-up pad.
For me, it came down to:

Mouse pads do not have the same "give" of Apollo/Gibson/Dill close-up pads. Sometimes the extra money is worth it! If you're determined/forced to go the cheaper route, you'd be better off going door to door at carpet stores and flea markets until someone will sell you a bound carpet sample that is not too hard and not too soft. For instance, there's a second-hand furniture store near me that had 30 of them for $2 apiece over the summer. Steve H

In the middle price range, best buy for the money, in my view, is the mat sold by Ronjo (see their web site). Very heavy duty, thick and sturdy.
My experience with the less expensive pads is that the top surface becomes delaminated with time and the pad needs to be replaced often. Also the thin pads with a spongy base layer have a mushy feel to me. Steve

A lot of the mats that are hyped with "Will not peel, can be rolled up, etc." have a top surface that acts a little like one side of velcro. This means that if you slide something across the mat that has a rough edge (like some shells) it will almost stick or at least make a ripping sound. The spongy surfaces are much smoother.
And yes, Dean Dill's velvet-topped mats are simply the best. If the price is no issue there is nothing better. (Beware though that his mats are rigid. You can not roll them up.) My Dean Dill mat is part of my formal close-up setting!

I took a 12x18-inch piece of plywood and glued a piece of half-inch medium density foam on top. Then I wrapped a piece of black velvet over the top and stapled it underneath after pulling it tight.
I then slipped this into a 12x18 oak picture frame and put a backing on it and man, does it look classy and the feel is tops. Total cost $21. The best part is other magicians think it costs $100 or more. Give it a try, it's cheap and classy. S |

Handcocks Fabrics stores carry the padded headliner material for automobile upholstery in colors. It is not like the heavy rubber backed pads that lie flat so well. However, it will stay flat enough, comes in many colors, is very cheap ($7/yard), and is about five feet wide if you would like to use it in cases, on tables, or just to protect other props.

Check out http://www.cards4magic.co.uk/acatalog/Close_Up_Mats.html — I got one of the Fournier mats and was very pleased with it.
