Any [idiot] with a script can do mentalism, it takes skill and panache to pull off the most basic of magic tricks That is a text I just received from a magician friend of mine. (slightly edited to make it more palatable for a family audience) I find him to be very much entranced by the 'look at me, aren't I amazing' aspect of magical performance. He really hates any effect where I appear to be doing 'nothing', and placing all the power in the hands of the spectator - "too uninvolved" apparently. Is there a killer argument one could use in these conversations or are we destined to argue for the remainder of our time upon this floating rock?
He is a liar. The demon is a liar. He will lie to confuse us. But he will also mix lies with the truth to attack us. The attack is psychological and powerful. So don't listen to him. Remember that - do not listen

Yes, this argument will never go away by virtue of the fact that there are too many small minded people on both sides of the discussion.

Simply point out to him that the most succsessful tv magician of the decade got famous through saying "LOOK LOOK" and using an invisible deck - and the most famous tv mentalist of the last decade is Derren Brown.
There is a clear difference.
I call myself "Thomas Cooper" here because this stops the magic café appearing when people google my stage name.
Does anyone else find the term "Special User" to be a bit condescending? |

"There´s no accounting for taste" - both as a reply for your friend and also as a philosophy.
Some love mentalism, some love cups and balls - these people do not have a problem. The ones with the problem are the ones that like to argue wether cups and balls are better than mentalism, or that one requires more skill than the other. It´s not apples for apples - that much I think you can agree on?
If you never fail, you're not trying hard enough.

Any idiot with a script can do mentalism I can't remember the last idiot performer I saw who had a script. Maybe if someone else wrote it... Even if that's true, any literate idiot can read a script aloud. It takes presentational and acting skills to bring that script to life. Quote:
It takes skill and panache to pull off the most basic of magic tricks That's why the most basic of magic tricks are found in cereal boxes? Idiots can learn to perform the mechanics of a double lift or a billet switch (I know we're in a public forum, but these are terms of art that mean nothing to the "laity"). I could train a chimp to execute a pass. Especially if he swallows the deck first.
The secret of deception is in making the truth seem ridiculous.

Tell him he's right and move on to another topic of conversation with him.
He gets confirmation and the spotlight, you get a little less of a headache.

How do you educate someone who relies on blatantly on his complete lack of knowledge?
Having done (or doing) both, I consider it a graduation out of something inferior. Not only do I use the same “skill and panache” as our magical brethren, but I have to do it with no obvious assistance, no “woofle dust”, and somehow try to keep it from looking like a magic trick. I’d almost suggest a competition with your ignorant friend. You do what you do, and he does what he does, and then ask the audience who has the real powers? They’re the only ones who matter.
...what if I could read your mind?

Those who try to make generic statements about the relative abilities of "magicians" and "mentalists" simply don't know what they're talking about and usually are pretty generic (read "cliched") themselves.
