Some may recall I have two distinct sets of nieces. Here are the latest updates on them:
Niece #1 (my side of family) from the both parent working public school divorced etc family. She got on the Deans list at her university (majoring in biology). Niece #2 (wifes side of family) from wealthy family, mommy stayed home, child went to private school that brags of 99% college attendence rate. She got an ankle thingy so the police can track her after pleading guilty to assault on a girl at a bar. Her parents, who pay her rent, are fighting the civil suit having now paid twice the amount the girl wanted to a lawyer because my niece feels that the scar doesn't take away from the victims looks. |

I have several nieces as well.
I have found, while looking through the Internet, that many other people have them too. Soooo.... you have 2, and they are different? Neato.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

You could start a novel... "A tale of two nieces" Probably a romance/mystery geared towards 14 year old girls and lonely housewifes. I'm sure for todays crowd you would have to add a vampire and a warewolf somewhere.
Good to hear your side of the family has the superior genes.

I have two nieces I've never met. But my wife just met them over the weekend, and brought back pictures. They're really, really, very cute.
That reflects on me, somehow, I think. |

I have two nieces. One just graduated from college, and the other is the state champion track star. Her brother calls her "bunns of steel". Oh yes my nephew is in medical school. The rest of my disfunctional family I'd rather not talk about.

I don't have any nieces or nephews, but one of my cousins' kids just got married. Palm Springs in June, outdoors. Brutal.

In my opinion, children are hard wired at birth. Working Mom, stay at home mom, rich privileged background, poor working class background, crazy parents, lazy parent, great parents...all has very little to do with it.
My guess is that you niece with the ankle bracelet would be in an ankle bracelet no matter who her parents are. The niece that is studying biology, would be studying biology no matter who her parents were. The sad part of, in my opinion, is that you seem to think comparing your wife's blood relative vs your blood relative is a cool thing to do on an online forum. In my opinion, it is not a very cool thing - and probably reflects on how lousy your parents were. |

Bill gets it. This was a case of 20 years plus of my sister in law constantly stating how she feels bad for my poor nieces and nephews because they were deprived (they were not) and went to public schools. It should be noted I went to private school and am a moron.

While both nature and nurture are in play, for the most part, Bill is right. It's more nature than nurture.

I believe that it's about 50/50 in most cases.

Things may have changed since I looked at it academically, but the twins studies that I was made aware of in school were showing a slight-to-moderate, but clear, trend toward the genetics over the environment.

In fact, it turns out that genetic variation is correlated with variations in people's environments, a finding that some theorists have interpreted to mean that genes help to create the environments! The idea here is that certain environments set off an appetite in the genes that nudges individuals to engage in certain experiences, and the environment then responds in a reciprocal fashion that reinforces an individual's nature."
