Hi all, I am pretty new to here. I love magic and all varieties of it and am hoping some people here could help me get into it more. I've done a few card tricks but only with trick decks. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get me more knowledge of things I can do with ordinary decks? Or any close up magic that can be done just in the street.

A question frequently asked here. I would recommend getting a copy of Mark Wilson's Complete Course in Magic. Easy to read, easy to learn from and largely inexpensive. It does not cover every aspect of magic, but gives you some good introduction to basic sleights, magic principles, and types of magic from close-up to Illusion. Most of the tricks in the book can be done with things fairly easy to find around town, and even gives you some directions to building some inexpensive props.
There are other texts such as Harry Lorayne's The Magic Book, Bill Tarr's "Now you see it Now you Don't", "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Magic" etc. Then once you have your feet wet a bit, you can decide if you want to specialize in a particular area. We have many forums here on the Magic Café covering a wide variety of magic specialities, and in each you can generally find many recommendations for books for beginners in that area as well as videos. One of the best things you can do is see if there is a magic club in your area. Both the International Brotherhood of Magicians and the Society of American Magicians list local rings and assemblies on their respective websites. You will find a wealth of instruction and direction through membership in such local clubs. Mark's book can be obtained through any number of sources, most major bookstores carry it, most of the online magic shops carry it, and you can buy it directly from Mark himself (autographed even) at : http://www.markwilsonmagic.com

Hi Father Photius. Unfortunatly in my area there isn't really anything. Im in the UK and unless you live near one of the big cities, it seems theres not a lot, but I am going to look into them books you recomended. One thing that always gets me is the bottle tricks. that's one thing I'd love to learn, where you put someones ring into a bottle, or coin, mobile phone, etc. Do you know anything about them sort?
Think I'm going to hit ebay to look for them books. Im sure its an easy place to find them. Thanks |

Welcome KrisWall,
In the U.S. lots of Magicians start at their local Libraries. Many of our systems are linked now so that we can get books from other Libraries. I believe I've seen Mark Wilson's book is in some Libraries. Perhaps this is true in the UK as well. Good Luck! Mary Mowder |

Thanks a lot Mary. I've bought Mark Wilson's off ebay. The library near me is alright but if you want sumthing ordering in it can take weeks so thought I may as well order off ebay. Quite cheap too.
Can you recomend any easy small tricks to get me started? I have a few little things but nothing too impressive that can fool people, most can guess them lol |

You'd be surprised at how amazing a simple trick can be when performed well. No kidding even a "Kiddie Trick" in the right hands can astound.
I started just handling the whole deck, shuffling, dealing, running cards and cuts. Once you are more comfortable with the deck you can move on more easily. My first Card effect was "Twisting the Aces", I can't recommend it highly enough, great fun. Rope effects are good Magic and exciting practice. -Mary Mowder |

I am a beginner and I have just recently started up again. Everyone advice on getting to know the cards is the best advice. Try learning overhand shuffle controls, pinky breaks and false cuts. These will keep you entertained but if, like me, your a bit impatient then try Topsy Turvy, Dr Daleys Last Trick or This, That and The Other.

Ha I tried Topsy Turvy and its actually not too bad, obviously if ya know the trick ya wont be fooled, but I got my gf lol. I had a kid teach me it on a youtube video. Might look into them others you suggested while I wait for my book. Im needing to get used to knowing how to hold the cards and moving things quicker and not so sloppy to make it obvious but Im sure its just practice.

You're going to love Mark Wilson's book. There's so many choices in magic and I think you're smart to focus in on one of two types otherwise, for me at least, it's easy to get overwhelmed.
