Another vote for Osterlind's Ultra Board. I feel very comfortable using it for numerous predictions (not just Mental Epic) and it never feels like a prop.
Must check out Paul's book. |

Maurice Fogel's MENTAL EPIC uses just a small ungimmicked blackboard, which has just 6 white circles drawn on it, plus a sheet of folded card to cover your predictions, There is only one 'out',just in case, used. Supreme Magic used to sell it but you can find it in my old friend Chris Woodward's (with Richard Mark) book--'Maurice Fogel--In Search Of The Sensational', pages 384 to 388.
And while you are about it--check out the other brilliant material in the book. Fogel was the UK's leading mentalist for years. Chris is married to Fogel's daughter, Nadine and became one of our leading magicians. We were teenage magicians together. Allen Tipton UK

The ungimmicked chalk board with six white circles on it is exactly what the inventor (U.F. Grant) started with, calling it "Citation" some years before Hen Fetsch added his gimmick to the board and renamed it "Mental Epic." The history of the effect and a great many of the methods for home construction are all documented in my e-Book "Whiteboard Citation for Mentalists" located in Book 2 of my Mini-Mysteries Magic Section on my site. And yes, the original could be performed without a force involved, as explained in the e-Book.

Osterlind has very good work in mental epic boards.

On his new DVDs, Osterlind has a killer routine with a standard mental epic board. There's a bit from Ronny Gann and then Osterlind added a no-force ending to it.

I couldn't agree more.
I appreciate this is an old thread...but I have to say that I've been using Osterlind's Mental Epic in nearly every adult show I do and it is, without a doubt, one of the highlights. While I agree that many ME boards look "proppy" -- this one is simply a chalkboard with six segments. What's more organic than a chalkboard?. And it DOES make perfect sense to cover the "predictions" before the big reveal at the end. My ME work was strictly limited to close-up prior to getting this board. I had a small magnetic prop suited to close-up. But something about the Osterlind model just makes it perfect for stage: * It's innocent looking * White on black (the chalk) can easily be seen by even huge audiences * No glare to the audience from stage lights * The back of the chalkboard is perfect for writing down other revelations * It's designed to be tough and the you-know-what works perfectly. Every time. You can't make it jam. And to boot -- the prop is perfectly crafted. I love this thing. Can you tell? I have used it a LOT and can't come up with a single negative. I DO acknowledge there are more elegant methods out there. (Cassidy's 4DT comes to mind.) All I know is that when I begin my ME routine that I've always had the complete attention of the audience and that I get shocked and amazed sounds with each reveal. It's going to be a very cold day in you-know-where before the Osterlind ME isn't packed into my props trunk for an adult show. Some (but not all) kidding aside, I'm also a big fan of Osterlind's Classic Epic board. I try to select props that can be used organically in multiple routines to give them a reason for being on stage. When I use something solely for one trick, it kind of screams, wekk, "trick". I use the back of that slate for most predictions so it's used throughout the show. It's a great size for travel, is sturdily made, and is good for drawing dups etc as well. I do recommend using a chalk holder with it (or any slate).

David-
It sounds like a reasonable prop the way you have described it. But I really don't view my 4DT as a "Mental Epic" type of routine at all. 4dt is a telepathy test and ME is a triple prediction effect. Two entirely different premises and presentations. The only common thing that I see is that they both use three participants. Good thoughts, Bob |

I stand corrected, Bob.
And no, Joe...it's not the fricking North Pole. It DOES get warm here. We're planning on July 22nd this year. You dork. David

If you prefer using the standard ME prop I agree with David Thiel and others who suggested Osterlnd's version. It's his routine that made me want to drag out the old board again
