I'd like to hear back from the original poster, Badger, on this. Did someone actually ask you this? And, if yes, in what context? It seems like you just tossed a question out and left the thread. What was the point?
Just wondering, |

Ok, I am a performing mentalist, I have come across some very neat opportunities and while meeting with people involved with TV, and comedy clubs, they keep asking me, “what are are you selling?” the answers should be obvious, after giving demos, however this question comes up. And I do not understand what they want.
The other questions are: “what are people paying for?” “How can we make money off of you?” |

Ohhhhh...
You are reffering to what sort of creative concept are you offering businesses... Why would company X hire you to perform...what do they get out of it. We aren't talking about the client that comes at you with an event for you to perform for, we are talking about the client you approach with an "idea". 80% of the performance opportunities I have every year are self created. I come from an advertising background where creative ideas clients can make money off was my bread and butter. Question now fully understood... This is an art. PM me with skype or MSN info and we'll chat. Best! J

Yes, your explanation puts the question into an entirely different light from the original post. (Which made the question sound like a snide comment given to a table hopper by a patron who doesn't care to watch you perform.)
The TV people want to know what the "hook" is. They want to know WHY their audience would be interested in you. Just saying "I entertain with mystery", or most of the standard answers you can find all over the Café (including the pompous "I provide a life transforming experience!") won't cut it. They want to know how you will appeal to their particular demographic and how your show will compare to others that are currently popular. The don't really want to know what you're selling. They want to figure out if you're saleable. Good thoughts, Bob |

In terms of getting your own show, Cable TV has really changed everything. You need to look at the specific demographics and overall themes of each particular cable network in order to effectively pitch them. The pitching, though, is normally done by the production company. While I have attended many "pitches", the ball is usually carried by the actual show producers and creators rather than the talent. As a performer you generally need to sell yourself and your overall vision first to a production company (and there are literally hundreds of them, if not thousands), because they know how to focus the pitch to the needs of each network.
If you've just looking for guest shots on the networks, that's what agents are for, although for local network affiliates you can sometimes effectively pitch yourself. Good thoughts, Bob |
