I don't think this is a hard force, but I think Shawn was trying to get him to choose a card within a certain range - in the Diamonds for sure. I think there is a spread that works but not one single would have seen a CF a mile away.
On one of Shawn's previous demo's of this trick another diamond card was chosen - not exact same, but similar range of cards. Getting the card into correct position was definitely impressive. Penn seems to be a little distracted though and Shawn's misdirections looked to be pretty effective. Not the DS part, but this routine after Shawn inserts the card is pretty much his ID/Omni on steroids. Lovely.

I agree! What a fantastic, personable guy. His performance was something to strive for. Not copy, just emulate that type of nice.

I thought the trick was great and definitely, in part, fooled Penn and Teller. However I don't agree with Shawn's great performance. This of course is my personal opinion and I'm sure Shawns a great guy, but I cant stand the frenetic, almost ADD, high-pitched delivery that I think hampered the trick. That and a little bit of sketchy handling killed off , for me personally, what could have been a more momentous climax.
Like I said though I think the trick itself is superb, I just have a very big problem with a zany or goofy presenter versus Simone more gentlemanly and suave perhaps. I thought Etiennes performance, though a bit convoluted, captured more of the essence of how I think magic should be presented. My 2c Dave |

He acted more like what you expect from a magician - but was going through the motions rather than igniting that childlike sense of wondor. When I met Shawn I thought he was hyper -sure. But his skills and timing are off the charts good.

Yes, thank god we have all different sorts of personalities performing magic. If everyone were the same, it would be really boring.
Think of movies. There are all sorts of genres. The same with painting, dance, singing, etc. We should encourage different types of presentation.

I don't think acting like a child begets a child-like sense of wonder. To each his or her own. I prefer a more elegant presentation myself and think "corny" is what devalues magic in the eyes of general society. Dave |

Shawn had to control the 7D before the classic force... don't know why they cut that part

Ettiene was pure quality. As always!
I would like to see the unedited clip of his performance (the part just before the bottle reveal) I'm not saying this effects anything he did on the night, I just love watching his performances! So, who will be back on the "special" show? |

[/quote] Well that's what we're talking about here aren't we....the style in which it was presented? That was my original comment. I'll tell you how I think it devalues magic in the public's perception. For large part, in this day and age, magician's are associated with kids and kids birthday parties. It wasn't always like that was it? If not, how did magician's become "non-serious" or "for kids" (as one example). Few non-magicians associate the word magician with , for example, a performance such as by Ricky Jay. As per my original comment, I was watching the Penn and Teller show with several members of "the laity" (ie. my friends and friends of friends) ....several of which were vocally annoyed by his portrayal as an enthusiastic adult. As an aside there is a french (Quebec perhaps) magician who, for a time, appeared in short clips that preceded movies in the theater, who for the same reasons I also thought the same way about. I think there's a very big difference , at least in my mind, between corny, comedic (such as Bill Malone for instance) andthe presentational style I believe does magic it's greatest service, which is humor infused elegance of say someone like Tommmy Wonder or David Berglas. Derren Brown for instance can be quite frenetic in his shows and yet he doesn't seem to get goofy or corny, again , In my opinion. Coming full circle I did state that I like the trick and Shawn may be a great magician skill-wise, Dunno, I've only seen a few clips and have never met the guy. Dave |
