"...estranging mentalism from magic is a mistake, and has nothing to do with the reality of a professional performance.
... Divisions od classification are amateurish concerns" Any thoughts? |

I particularly agree with the second part.

Depends who is saying it, and why..
Context is everything. |

When one cites a quote, isn't it customary to attribute it to someone and provide a reference to the work in which it appeared?
That said, I think that Derren Brown's own performances contradict the quote as written. Good thoughts, Bob |

You didn't give your opinion on the quote.
I deliberately left the source and author out, it shouldnt take a mind reader to work out why. |

I thought I did. (But, then again, I imagine that most mentalists already know my opinion on this.)

It's worth bearing in mind that the author of the quote (Derren Brown) was performing as a close-up magician at the time of writing, primarily around Bristol. The character that appeared in "Mind Control" was not the same character as the chap table-hopping around Byzantium - indeed, it would be hard to imagine the character on televison performing cigarette-through-coin, bottle-through-table or bending forks.
I would certainly agree that making tribal distinctions is counter-productive, if I were a "coin magician" it would be ludicrous to never look beyond the coin magic literature. Whether such distinctions are useful to you as a performer is something quite different. For me, I feel that it's vitally important to be self-consistent in your presentation, and to have a thorough understanding of what that is. For me, that means presenting mind reading that works according to a specific paradigm, and magic tricks simply would not work in that context. I can imagine some performers being able to work magic and mentalism together - either as demonstrations of the fallibility of perception, or as an example of what we do before we get onto the "real stuff" (Just as an example premise - I don't genuinely believe that one is superior to the other at all). I know that (for the most part) this doesn't work for me - it just doesn't make any sense. |

Well, most of us are amateurs...I do magic and mentalism all the time. And my audiences know the difference.
