Wow.
I'm a teacher. I guess I should have said that over in the "What do you do for a living" thread. But I'm a coward. Matt gives me courage. |

There were a handful of teachers in my school years who seemed to know what they were doing and were able to inspire and teach their students. The vast majority of them were crap heads who shouldn't have been issued a teachers certificate. Matt is wrong to assume that teachers with tenure wont get lazy because you could tell at our schools which ones were counting down the days.

I had pretty good teachers. I also found that not every teacher is for every student. Someone who really got me interested was often boring and uninspiring to my friends, and vice versa.
When I taught, what I did find is that many teachers become disillusioned toward the end of their careers. Sometimes failing health or other problems just make teacher an extraordinarily difficult job. Often there is a sense of "the job has changed and this isn't what I signed up for 30 years ago." But I've never met a teacher who doesn't want students to learn. Ever. John

I detested public school. I actually put a lot of blame for taking so long to go back to college on the public school staff always telling me I was stupid and would never acomplish anything. Those ***s say it enough times you start to believe it. They made me afraid of school.
Well, guess what? Mr. "You'll never graduate high school" is now in the honors' society and has a stack of dean's list letters you SOB's! Quality may vary by location, but District 81 can kiss my donkey. Rant concluded.

I'm sure everyone 'wants' students to learn. I don't think that's ever been the argument. But are you also saying that you've never met a teacher that had given up? Or gotten to the point where they just didn't seem to care anymore?

Given up? No. Shrunk to much less than he or she had been 30 years ago? Yes, as I wrote above.
I don't romanticize teachers. But I sympathize with the fact that they are very easy targets who get a lot more abuse than they deserve. Everybody who went to school has an opinion about school. We live in a world wherein we like to pretend that all of our achievements are because of our personal greatness and none of them are due to the care we received at home or in school. John

From Matt's interview:
"Why would you take a s***ty salary and really long hours and do that job unless you really loved to do it." Matt repeats the PC urban legend about teachers. In reality, the salary is not that bad, the hours aren't that long, the benefits are great. I believe that a lot of people go into teaching because they want to make a difference and they like what they do. However, it's just ignorant to assume that there aren't some people who get into teaching for other reasons than they love to do it. And it's also true that just because you love to do it, it doesn't make you a good teacher. If loving to do something made you good at it, American Idol auditions wouldn't be half as hilarious, (or pathetic, depending on your point of view), as they are. And wouldn't it be great if no one was incentivized by more pay or job security? Of course that's the marxists dream, isn't it? From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs. Of course, in that case, Matt wouldn't be making the kind of obscene money he makes now would he? So, yes, it's a sweet, heartfelt, fairly tale of an interview. |

And before you think I hate teachers, let me say again, I'm married to one and I think she's one of the best. I'm just disappointed that the system that is in place doesn't do anything to help cultivate and best and get rid of the worst.

There are bad teachers. Some who have given up but I can guarantee that is a small percentage. It is just like any field, there are bad truck drivers, bad doctors, bad police officers, bad lawyers, bad clergy, bad fireman, bad investment bankers, bad maids, bad fry cooks etc. All to often, we accentuate the bad and pay no attention to the good and the sacrifice they make. With that, we end up painting people with a broad brush. It is not fair to the majority who are good at what they do and wake up every morning ready to give their best.
Peace

A lot of my friends are teachers and I must say that they do work hard but also seem to think they have it worse than everyone else. They do work hard but so does eveyone else (well I do), they moan that they can only take holidays at certain times but they do have a lot of holidays. Teachers do a fantastic job and they do get paid well (better than me) but they must remember that there is always someone worst off than you.
