Wow this is a disturbing thread. I can't believe some of the negative responses here. Seriously, what in the world is the problem? Someone created something unique and you're taking issue with the fact that it is not of everyone? Newsflash, performing magic (heck, watching magic) isn't for everyone. What high horse did you fall off and get kicked in the groin that would make people write such negative, non-constructive responses? Bri has been one of the more valuable member of the Café' (in this area at least) and released an idea to the public, but because it's a new spin on an old classic you through a hissy fit? If that's the case, you're going to HATE my new project (and I'm ok with that).
As for topical, I really don't care if something is topical or not. However, if I were a performer at a tech booth at a conference, these would be perfect. And I would use them and love the way they fit in to my work there. Then I would take that check and cash it in the bank, and then I would laugh and the angry, short sighted, uncreative people who spend time tearing someone down rather than building them up. Bri, great thinking and work. If donnie says they are good then you know they are great! -Lee |

I don't know about that Lee, but I can tell you that I love the three shell game and my shell game presentation elicits a superstitious emotional response from the spectators. Even if they don't believe in magic, they will not fail to feel the deep-seeded pull of superstition and laugh at their own response to the wicked situation they are in. With my tongue firmly planted in my cheek, they will have a good time.
A good three shell game "presentation" by a magician can use any objects for the shells - but it's better to use objects that are DESIGNED for the game. A good three shell "game" by a sharper should use any ordinary objects for the shells (like pop bottle caps) - I don't do this and enjoy both my kneecaps... So where one philosophy is adamant that the shells should not be extraordinary, I believe it is in the minority and not the market for Bri's Cybershells. So, the Cybershells are for magicians - and that means they are props for a presentation and can be just about anything that fits with the magician's presentation and personality AND, most importantly, add to (or at least, not take away from,) the entertainment value of the trick. Bri's shells are cool. And they are cast from pewter for crying out loud! And for those that don't know, English pewter casting is the finest in the world. If Voldemort doesn't like that they break with tradition in their design, perhaps he can get over that considering the long tradition of finely crafted English pewter casting that is inherent in them. |

And...
If you took the TARDIS to New Earth in the year 5,000,000,000 - would a magician be using walnuts? I don't think so. |

Thank you, Dr J. My presentation, props and routine are very different. I do still LOVE to see the shells presented in the traditional way with walnuts, bottle caps etc. I just wanted something different.
As a side note, I fully expect the next Dr Who to be Eddie Izzard and if that doesn't happen I shall be most upset! Bri |

The fetish of "how big do the balls look when produce your loads" has led to a good practical design - but much rationalization. The old timers knew that it was all about the performer and what's reliable. You can always call it a "#$%^&&^%$&**(YYY" (pronouced RIIQ) offering cup and let them figure out the balls are really eggs laid by the "cups" or such. Historical accuracy in the realm of fiction? What's that?

I don't see what is so fictitious about the history of the Three Shell Game. It has a history, actually.
I think the good doctor has simply drawn a parallel between the arguments against changes to the props and other props that are modernized (like cups) and not questioned. And I think it goes without saying that "it is all about the performer and what's reliable". And isn't that really at the root of the arguments for, or against, changing the prop?... personal taste and comfort zone. |

::Places tongue in cheek:: Then says:
Donnie! I noticed you changed the RNT2.com logo! There was nothing wrong with the first logo. I can't believe a distributor of classical magic apparatus would ever change the RNT2 logo. I'm so frustrated that you made a change/update that I don't want to surf your site drooling over beautiful craftsmanship pieces of magic. ::removes tongue from cheek:: Then says: Just kidding :-p -Lee |

Got my shells today. Initial impression is very good. They look as good as advertised and the steals and loads with these shells are as effortless as any shells I have ever handled...a fact that really surprised me.

Your cyber shells are a real cool twist on an old plot!
Ever notice in 90% of RS posts that he claims he talked to his so called virtual people who always agree with his stance, but they will never come forward to support his claims. With every thread he attacks, he has these so called virtual supporters who we are supposed to believe in. lmao what a joke. sorry for this digression Quote:

As much as I think this is a nifty creative theme for a shell game-ish presentation, anyone notice that the trick's already slightly out of date as no one makes computer mice with track balls anymore?

I believe I must weigh-in on this one, as, I also have obtained a set of these. They are top-quality. Anyone proficient with three-shell routines, and, with any small amount of imagination, can now perform for three-year-olds without going over their heads, or, any other age group. We've been trying to put "variations" on everything under the sun in magic...sometimes sucessfully, sometimes not so successfully. This one is a "home run", and, should be considered by anyone who wishes to expand the possibilities of their presentation(s). In the mean time...don't worry. I don't think the walnut shells are going "bye-bye".
Thanks to all...Michael |
