Yes, you’ve got to get it ALL in, but there are paths and there are pitfalls. Take the paths. Sounds like Deadsets' got it right, doing what she enjoys.

Dear DS,
Thanks so much for your great sense of humor, which seems sorely lacking on this forum. Kidding aside - Ball Vase - PLEASE find and view Charlie Frye perform his version. He uses the 3" sponge ball vase, yes a sponge ball iteration, not the classic solid style. Please must see. PM if you have any questions, I actually emailed Mr. Frye about it and he gave me the description of the type of ball vase and links for it!! Wow, what a cool guy to have shared that. Don't forget to drill on some false shuffles, an ambitious routine, then a milk and cookie break. thanks for being a good sport and playing along DS |

Since she is still a 6, she has short attention span, cards may not appeal to her much since she isn't as exposed as adult to gambling and all that stuff
I advise letting her watch magicians in order to let her find out what she'd want... its best not to force her to like what you want her to like. although its good to influence her:) |

Look I couldn't really care less if she is or isn't into magic but she loves it so I thought I could get her started and see what happens.

I practice magic with my six and seven year old and I will attest that it is difficult to focus their attention. The ball and vase is an awesome suggestion for this age. Cups and balls is also a nice way to teach fundamentals of misdirection. When we practice together we use one cup and one ball.
It's nice to also let them perform a few tricks to really build their confidence such as the zig zag rope box or the magic vision box. |

As a former magic shop demonstrator, I often had parents bring in very young children who wanted to buy a magic trick. One of the ones that was popular was Tenyo's "Crazy Spots":
http://www.mightyrad.com/p-142/Crazy-Spots-Tenyo I like the Ball and Vase also. After teaching the basic routine, I show a variation where I talk about seeing a magic shop dealer do the trick where the ball vanishes and reappears. I asked the dealer how much the trick costs. He said, "About this much..." and changes the ball to a bunch of pennies, dimes, and nickels. I also sold a lot of "Tree of Hearts" tricks and the Magical Block (red block that changes a penny to a dime). ----- Amado "Sonny" Narvaez

She would probably love D'Lites, and they teach a lot about performing and entertaining.

Some toy stores sell some good value magic sets for kids. I'm sure Asda (Walmart in US) sells some tricks that are good enough to entertain family. Once she is more serious you can upgrade to more robust pieces of kit.

My local shop recommends the Criss Angel Platinum kit to all the kids and parents around here. I agree that the kit should be hidden and the various tricks introduced one at a time. Watch some youtube videos of performances and then research what she likes so she can learn what she enjoys. My teen and I work it out that way. She really enjoys the learning the various tricks and then showing them off to her friends.

Been over six months since this thread first appeared. My 9 year old (soon to be ten) is begging to do magic for his Cub Scout pack, and he’s fooling the grown-ups. (There is a book out called “Cub Scout Magic” but it’s basically just “floating a needle” or “looking through a tube with both eyes open” type stuff.) He’s doing real magic, and feeling very good about himself.
His favorite trick right now is passing a borrowed quarter through a borrowed handkerchief. He’s learned about angles and misdirection, and is trying really hard to make up original “patter”. I give him access to my props while we’re at home, but for his “public performances” it’s almost all done with “normal” items. Big brother (11) is less involved, but he still tries a few things. His favorite is “Cheek to Cheek”. He can do a near perfect ribbon spread and zip flip. Even knowing the secret, it’s fun to watch. We made our own “marked deck” (How’s that for a really sick father/son project? ) and he’s learning to use them. Si Stebbins is helping him practice math skills. Just meant as an encouragement to the OP. Don’t underestimate your kid(s). If they can stand, talk, and keep a secret for at least 3 minutes, they’re probably old enough to do something worthy of applause.
