"Is there any point to which you would wish to draw my attention?"
"To the curious incident of the dog in the night-time."
"The dog did nothing in the night-time."
"That was the curious incident," remarked Sherlock Holmes.

And I just read last week that solar storms are at an all-time low...

The calm before the storm. The last time we had solar flares of this magnitude it knocked out Telegraphs.

I need to make sure my telegraph is well grounded, then, I guess...

As well as every electrical device you own. The power grid is going to act like a huge antenna if and when these storms hit. They are predicting power outages that might last for decades in some areas of the world as it will take that long to replace the power generation and transmition capabilities of the utilities that have been knocked out. Generation plants, substations and transmition lines will all have to be replaced.

If we're going by the article it seems Much Ado About Nothing:

Quote:
The 1859 solar storm hit telegraph offices around the world and caused a giant aurora visible as far south as the Caribbean Islands...I don't think this week's solar storms will be anywhere near that. This will be a two or three out of five on the NOAA Space Weather Scale," said Kunches...The first of the three solar explosions from the sun this week already passed the Earth on Thursday with little impact, Kunches said, noting, the second was passing the Earth now and "seems to be stronger."

And the third, he said, "We'll have to see what happens over the next few days. It could exacerbate the disturbance in the Earth's magnetic field caused by the second (storm) or do nothing at all."

So computers, the internet, the Café will all go down then! oh my!
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

I thought I heard some high NASA physicist recently say that our atmosphere was sufficient protect us from even the worst solar flares?

I just checked by 2011 Observer's Handbook from the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Solar activity follows roughly an 11 year cycle, but the cycle that ended around the end of 2009 had a very long quiet period--the longest in at least a century.

Solar activity has been increasing through 2010 and 2011 and is moving toward the maximum for the period. Consistent with this has been the increasing amount of Northern Lights activity this year.

NASA indicates that the current cycle may be quiet overall, but it has the potential for some very violent solar storm activity.

Let the good times roll!

My iMac has been turning off repeatedly since installing OS X Lion. It must have been the solar storms, and I just thought the reason was that Lion is a piece of CRAP!

The number of solar storms is at an all-time low, but the three that did hit are huge storms.

My electric stove has been beeping oddly. My microwave is turning itself on. (I had to unplug both.)
