This has probably been discussed before but thought to try again just in case. What, in your opinion, is THE best rock song of all time? Tough one I know.
I will start off by submitting "Doctor My Eyes" by Jackson Browne.

Mystery Train.

And the 10,000 songs that followed.

And the next 10,000.

Sorry, but rock can't be about a single song. It's way too big for that. Rock is the art of freedom.

I'm a Jackson Browne fan, and "Doctor My Eyes," is a fine piece of lyric writing and song, but I'm with Jeff. Way too big.

Disagree with the responders. Unless you take the position that no song is better than any other song, it's hard to think that there's not a "best" song. Naturally, as with most things, the differences may be imperceptible. But just because two ants looking up at a bunch of skyscrapers can't tell which is tallest, that doesn't mean that NONE of them stands higher than the others. Considering that you can put an infinite number of digits after the decimal point (i.e. 9.68396982756843 is higher than 9.68396982756842), it seems much more incredible that (at least) two songs are EXACTLY as good as each other.

Unless, as I say, you're going to take the position that all art is inherently value-neutral, and that, for instance, Beethoven's 5th is no better than Hanson's MmmmmmmBop, in which case I probably don't have much to say to you about almost anything.

So don't let them talking you out of it, Glen! You are correct...there IS a best rock song. It's just not Doctor My Eyes; it's Stairway to Heaven. Of course, I could be wrong about that; I'm just an ant looking at the skyline.

Hey, did I ever tell you guys I used to take guitar lessons from Jackson Browne's brother?!

By the way, taking the position that there's a best rock song ever in no way ties you to the position that rock is "about" just one song.

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley.

It's tough. This should be the top TEN rock songs of all time. THAT way you could include "A Whole Lot of Rosie" "Back in Black" "Stairway to Heaven"....and?

But 4 + 3i is neither higher than, nor equal to, nor lower than 1 + 2i; not all sets are totally ordered.

I couldn't say. I know what some candidates are, but I doubt I could pick one.
I would consider "The Fixxer" by Pearl Jam a contender.
"Ziggy Stardust" by Bowie.
"Baba O'Reilly" by the Who.
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen.
"Dragula" by Rob Zombie.
"Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" by Van Halen.
"Immigrant Song" by Led Zeppelin.
"Anarchy in the UK" by the Sex Pistols.

I could go on all day and not be able to pick one.

Now you're just being wicked.

Besides you only needed to invoke partial ordering to make your point.

The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.--Yeats

No, the Internet says it's "Stairway to Heaven." So you're all wrong.

Note: The above comment was made tongue-in-cheek, I realize there's no way to order songs and do agree with Lobo. Take the above post with a grain of salt.

Hey *I'm* not wrong...I said it was Stairway! And if you don't think they're ordered, then sadly, I'm apparently the only one you don't agree with.

To be fair, I missed your vote for "Stairway to Heaven" in the post. Stairway is definitely iconic and makes the top spot on these lists whenever they're brought up. I just think that asking who the best guitarist or drummer is would be a more interesting debate (no contest for vocalist, Freddie Mercury).

No contest for vocalist? Remember Roy Orbison?

Buckethead and Neil Peart, respectively. Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance.

(Steve Harris on bass, btw)
