After some time making my basic effect of both, I'm starting a quest to find a better matrix and chink-achink effect.
My problem is that nowadays there are thousand of that effect on air, so please, Can someone recommend me one effect of each? (if it's possible, give me a reference (book, video, etc..) about where to find them). Thanks. |

I have a suggestion. There are indeed many excellent routines out there, most of them published, some not.(A lot of references can be found scattered over this section)
There remains one problem; that the more extensive routines still need a certain surface to be performed on. This implies that you can only perform them if such a surface is available or if you use your close-up pad. I think in most professional performance circumstances this can be a drag. It prevents a multi-phase matrix to be performed at a moments notice, as for instance, coins-across, 3-fly, or spellbound. Why don't we try to improve the method in a practical sense instead of new variations. As far as I know, only David Williamson's hybrid chinc-a-chinc/coins across can be done anywhere, anytime, regardless of the surface. I have some ideas I'm currently trying out...

The Malini-Bey Chink a Chink, in Stars of Magic, is as good a version as there has ever been. Most of the magicians I see do it, or a version of it. Leave out the ending though! That is a critical error. The ending is constructed to defeat the spectators' cause and effect conclusion that there are extra objects. It leads them to another effect and takes the wind out of thier sails as they are about to announce that you must have extra sugar cubes, or whatever. In fact, the "extras" they suspect are openly displayed as having been magically produced. The impression should be that you can make as many as you want, whenever you want! I have done this exactly as described in SoM for years, and it always plays well. It is also one of the first examples of the hands not crossing one another, and leaving the spectator with a feeling of invisible flight, rather than clever manipulation. Sugar cubes are not readily available anymore, but I have done this with a variety of other objects. In California, and other states, dice and dice cups are common in resaurants and bars. The dice adapt well to Chink-a-Chink, and lend themselves to other effects as well. Bottle caps work beautifully, in fact Goshman used to do this trick by bringing out a beautiful, ornate jewelry box, opening it to reveal - Beer caps! "What did you expect, jewels?" he would say, always getting a chuckle at the very least. There are other things that you can use, and, in fact, I have done this on a camping trip, sitting around the campfire, with rocks, and on the beach with sea shells. The simplicity and clarity of the routine are something to be seriously considered before moving on to the many variations that exist. But, that's just this old man's opinion....

I share your opinion "old man"
I understood the question was focused on the use of coins only. Indeed if you use more 3 dimensional-shaped objects, the surface is no problem. And wow...! Doing it on a sandy beach gives some really weird method opportunities! Talking about a surface "with some give"...

Hi Iris!
You can check out the reviews of my new book on coin technique called Matrix God's Way at online-visions.com and coinvanish.com. Also, read all of the reviews on it in the Good, Bad, and the Garbage book review section. It is a VERY strong collection of extremely powerful and visual effects of this nature. There are also two barehanded matrix / translocation-type routines (BQM and Trans-Knee-Cation) that do not require a close-up pad. You can PM me if you have any questions... John B. Born |

Get Dean Dill's videos on Matrix.
Do not watch Armando, as you will immediately want to slash your wrists and never pick up a coin ever again!

Hahaha, yeah pour some salt in my open wounds, Pete!
Oh and I hate to say this (because of selfish reasons) but John's book is a jewel. Forget I said it.

Another great Matrix is Reverse Matrix by Gaston Quieto. You can find it on his video Twenty, along with some other great magic

I still perform a very basic Matrix with four coins and two cards. It's quick, effective, and direct. I also still like the original Malini approach to Chink-a-Chink as taught in Stars Of Magic.

The key to any good matrix in my opinion is the smoothness of the steal.. no matter what method you are using.
I would really listen to Paul Chosse's input on the matrix, because we are getting valuable information from one of the best close up workers around. vinny ps hope someday to meet you Paul |

If you want to get away from a close-up pad, there are some interesting variations...David Williamson (picking up the coins); Jason Dean (on the knees while sitting down), as well as some cool takes on performing a four coin assembly on your open hand. However, unfortunately nothing in this genre will ever match the visual impact (in my opinion) that can be achieved with a close-up pad (or similar working surface). Well, not released as of yet...

Pete,
I totally agree with what you said about Armando. But that is a totally different effect in my mind. Just like most he does. |

Surprised folks did not start with the classics;
'Yang Ho' sympathetic coins David Roth's chink-a-chink with coins That full coins and cards routine at the back of Bobo's. It is only AFTER mastering the basics ... that the differences in the newer versions have any utility. Basics are not easy or simple. They are there so you have a place so start. Trendy version number 100001 with the kicker endings will always be there if you feel the need.

(coincidentally, similar to the Goshman Purse Frame WITH the bag attached) I initially went with bottle caps because I couldn't find any sugar cubes and because I have real difficulty doing a classic palm. Bottle caps are a "no-brainer" solution. Those little crimped edges are excellent for picking up a cap. Because of the "pointy edges," the cap will almost stick to your palm even without much clinching or contraction of the hand muscles. Very little (if any) hand movement is involved when using bottle caps. I've also used the 1" little super balls. They seem to have an excellent "tackiness" that helps with the pick-up. Every so often, I will wash these balls with soap and water. That removes any accumulated grease and oils and also seems to renew the "tackiness." As Larry Davidson is fond of saying: "That darn (insert magician's name) stole my idea 30 years before I thought of it!!!" (grin) Mike
