Sorry for a newbie question, but as I look at books, websites and posts, I come across tons of things that I am not familiar enough with to make an intelligent decision. As a beginning EA (and I mean very green) I am looking into buying a pair of cuffs. But, there are so many out there. What is a "standard" set of cuffs that I should start with? Thanks in advance.

Standard cuffs for a newbie would be: Smith and Wesson, Peerless, American and Hiatt. They are carried by most police forces and are as good a starting point as any.
I like the Peerless pre model 300 and model 300 (same cuff actually) made in the 60's, they pop up on Ebay all the time for cheap. They are extremely easy to pick in both the double lock and single lock postion. X

Buy what you can afford. Then look around and see what is available. Has any certain type of cuff caught your eye? Are you looking at tricked/gaffed cuffs or regular cuffs?

Go for the scary ones. Like high security cuffs with anti shim protection. JOKING!

We sell cuffs at the store I manage. We have leg irons too. Last week I went out into the parking lot and did my first cuff escape, mostly on a dare, in front of a group of regulars. What a blast! I had two sets of cuffs on my wrists and the leg irons on my forearms. I had no idea how much fun escaping could be!

S&W model 100s are my favorite. Avoid the cheap discount ones like Valor. Nobody escapes from broken handcuffs, even with a key. Just a thought.
P.S. Broken Valor handcuffs can come off your wrist pretty easy with 3 foot bolt cutters.

Firedice, try cuffing yourself like the Chicago pd do, behind your back with palms facing outwards. I have successfully escaped several pairs like this.

Thanks guys for the help so far. Let's see what's been said so far—peerless pre-model 300 and model 300 and S&W model 100. I'm guessing any of those three would be good to start with? What about those antique-looking ones? (Darby, I believe???) Are those good to begin with or should I stay away for awhile? Or are they not great at all?
Again, thanks for the help.

Hey Gabe,
You kind of left your question open ended so I started you with "standard" cuffs. Others that can be easy (depending on knowledge) are: Darby (most any model), Takeda, transport chains, Cobb's, Saf-Lok, Clejuso, 11 and 12 series. The list goes on. Many in the new list are based on a minimal amount of knowledge but you need to have read the right books or talked to the right people (being the escapes inventor). Shawn

Zodiac, don't ask how I know this, but Chicago cops have been using those little plastic twist-tie things lately. Takes all the fun out of being arrested!
To be honest, I was lucky to get out of the cuffs at all. I don't know what I was thinking. |
