I had posted this http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=44 the discussion helped me to change my mindset. Decided to try Kid shows and now see them as a great way to start out. I said I was more serious than funny but that was just an excuse for not working on a real personality. I developed one routine that I could try that may or may not work. Besides that though I certainly have another that could work. Goes like this.
ROUTINE- The magician explains that he will be doing a very old classic. Torn and restored paper. Shows how it is traditionally done introducing a napkin from his bag he proceeds by tearing it up. Scrunches it into a tight ball he pulls a magic pen from his pocket. Waves it over the paper ball returning it then shows the napkin whole again. Explaining that some may know the commonly known secret he shows. A secret napkin hidden in his hand. Stating that he can explain how it’s switched asks for a young volunteer to teach. A volunteer comes up is given two napkins and a magic pen to place in their pocket. They have one hidden in their hand and after the tearing is done it is explained that while you reach into the pocket. A switch is made, the magician demonstrates and the volunteer does the same. Explaining that this is a distraction the magician goes on to state that if the secret is seen a bit of magic can be used. He then opens the other one in his hand to reveal both fully intact. Obviously the volunteer cannot duplicate. So he goes on to simplify saying all you half to do is place a single napkin in the hand. They simultaneously do so. After the magician uses his wand to cause endless paper to protrude out his hand. Again the volunteer cannot. In a last hope the magician figures perhaps if they used his wand which is better. So giving them the wand to wave over their paper in the magicians hands. The magician then hands the paper back over and whala the child is now pulling endless paper from their hand. This could also be done after POP-OUT HAMBURGER to make it longer. I think this could certainly work. I want to start doing shows now for free to start and see where it goes. Thanks all for your help and encouragement.

A general word of advice about kids as volunteers: Make sure the kid succeeds. Don't let the sucker trick concept lure you into a situation where you get it right and the kid doesn't. You can get away with this with some adults, but not with kids. It isn't all that kind, really.
I saw a magician at the local fair a week ago today who did a torn and restored napkin on a small outdoor stage. His kid volunteer was also handed a napkin and told to tear it up. The magician demonstrated and went through the whole process of scrunching it up and so on. The unexpected part (for me) was when he checked the kid's napkin wad, handed it back to have him squish it a bit tighter, and the kid's napkin restored while the magician's did not. It was a very kind way to approach it because the kid did the magic, the audience got to see magic happen, the magician got a laugh and a clap. It worked pretty well, though my wife later told me the switch was obvious to her (she doesn't really look for those things and I'm kind enough to not torment her with magic most of the time). Kids are a great audience for a number of reasons. They won't give you huge applause you have not earned. Sometimes they won't give any applause, but they love having someone care enough to entertain them. They will also generally tell you whenever you screw up and flash something, which is harrowing, but will make you a lot more careful. I just tonight scripted a new cup and ball routine (well, new to me, not really any new concepts) and I will have to work it for my kids when I get it smoothed out a bit. They'll tell me when my ideas work and when they won't. -Patrick |

Just to clarify: This is just one routine IN your show right? It's not your whole act?

Mr. Woolery I can see where sucker effects with children can at times be bad. I have tried it with some adults and not yet with kids but the adults like it. Repetative trial and error will tell for sure but I think I sucker them in a comedic way and only twice. The third try is where they not only succeed to make up for things but produce something spectacular. So I think it should work. Good luck with your routine and hope it turns out excellent. The Mighty Fool I did mention I could do this after POP-OUT HAMBURGER which even then may not be a complete routine. But I do plan on starting with short 5-10 minute routines which I would let people know. More can always be added though and this is something that can probably go many ways. Let you guys know my progress.

I'd dispense with the sucker part and just do the beginning and end. Perform the torn and restored, explain it, get a kid up, your paper restores, but they do a MUCH BETTER TRICK and turn theirs into a colorful streamer. Same trick, but they are not embarrassed and are the HERO.

I totally agree with you Mr Wooolery. You never want the kid to be the sucker. Ive don't this trick on stage where their napkin restores and mine don't. I also have don't this trick for years table hopping. After I the kids napkin restored and mine hasnt I would even have them wave their knife, fork spoon or straw over mine and then it would restore. Great trick unless you make the child feel stupid.
If you want your to restore and not the person helping you do it in a bar for a drunk or the huckler at your kids party. Great idea Starrpower for that ending. |

Just want to add a note that some tricks are called sucker tricks (Hip Hop Rabbit, Pizza Box, Die Box) but are not really strictly sucker tricks in the sense of the volunteer or audience is made to look foolish.
A lot of it is presentation but most of those type of tricks are magician in trouble (or clown in trouble) tricks with an unexpected ending. Those type have a lot of built in comedy because to a child seeing the clown (ok, magician) in trouble is inherently funny. The unexpected ending is not making them 'suckers' it is just resolving the comic tension of the performer in trouble. It's been discussed often here but bears repeating.

You should always have the kid get the better of you! In my show, I repeatedly ask for volunteers by saying "Oh, so does one of you think that YOU could do this BETTER???" The first time only the boldest raise their hands, but by the third time , after the kids realize that the odds are totally stacked in their favor, EVERYBODY raises their hand!

I'm not sure why you would introduce the trick by mentioning the Torn and Restored Newspaper. I don't think it adds anything to the presentation.

Hip Hop Rabbit great effect. I use it in some of my shows also. Think the thing here is your doing it to the whole group instead of singling one kid out.

I think there was an old Marvel carachter called Mandrake the Magician...
Why do you need a comic strip about a magician? Making magic the theme of a magic routine always seems a bit pointless to me... Do you have newspapers with a pull-out comic strip section? They could be good for T&R for children |

Well in the UK some of the newspapers have a pull out section for children on sundays. Which might be good for a torn and restored newspaper effect. I was looking at popular childrens comics recently and a lot of them are now made with thick glossy covers and therefore not as suitable for doing torn and restored with.
T&R: torn and restored |

Tried my coloring book out at work today and think I could work on the presentation more. The ending is great as to be expected with all the colors coming out aside from the length and obscurity. However the kids didn't always seem to get the whole colors disappearing thing. Maybe there is a way to call attention to it more to emphasize. For one I suppose I could talk about the animals in the coloring book. Saying whats your favorite animal I like ___. Then ya such n such are wonderful, there is also ____ and so on. I have ideas for bettering the ending to but the important thing is emphasizing the colors disappearing. It's like I have read about the c&b your routine shouldn't be about your final loads they should be the icing on the cake with them not just remembering them.
