No one else will mention them, but I will because of the great influence they had on virtually everyone who learned to play the guitar in the early sixties - and many of those who went on to greatness of their own:

The Beach Boys Black Flag Nirvana Metallica KISS (I hated KISS. Hated hated hated. But "definitive American"? Gotta include them.) |

A lot of giants of rock named here, groundbreaking and hugely influential, but only Springsteen qualifies in my book as anywhere near a definitive rock 'n' roll band.
I feel like cheating and saying The Traveling Wilburys, but to be honest: Buddy Holly and The Crickets |

Well, definitive depends on the definition of definitive.
As I myself have tried to define rock and roll, the music thrives on certain elements. What those elements are is, of course, open to discussion. But given what I personally think they are, then Springsteen's band really does come very close. The one musician who comes closest (other than Elvis, of course, who wasn't really a musician but something descended from America's Olympus) is, IMHO, Bob Dylan. But he never really had a "band" in the sense that I think Lobo meant it. Of course, The Band played with Dylan, and The Band was about as American a band as I can think of. Though they were Canadians. |

Well when I think of rock & roll I think of the 50s and a band of individuals; Jerry Lee Lewis. Elvis and all the other greats of that era.
If there is a single truth about Magic, it is that nothing on earth so efficiently evades it.

abc, you obviously didn't read my total diss of Bon Jovi over in the Beatles thread, or you would have said something. Everyone else on your list is cool. But Bon Jovi? AAARRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG! |

Another apples and oranges thread. There are too many sub-divisions of rock to name one single band as the best. Southern rock, alternative rock, classic rock, oldies rock, heavy metal, soft rock, pop-rock, blues rock, rock-a-billy, etc.? Most of the bands already listed are awesome, but far too diverse to crown one "best in show".
