If I were the repeating type I would say Grateful Dead again.

I'd never thought of this before. The iconic solo acts are mostly American and the iconic bands are mostly British. This is very provocative.

Then the loudspeakers started blaring . . . . . . The Beatles. |

What about America? Or Wall Of Voodoo, j/k. I was going to say Tom Petty, but that was mentioned much earlier in the topic. I second Tom Petty though as my final answer.

I almost specified Petty on the list.
AC/DC = not American

Guess they forgot to tell Bill Buckley. "...as we reason and love, we are able to hope. And hope enables us to resist those things that would enslave us." |

AC/DC = Australian, as I recall.
Saw them in concert once, and they had this HUGE runway for Angus to run up and down to wow the crowd. But what struck me the most (as a poor guitar player) was how important the rhythm guitar is in their music. Over in the Beatles thread I mentioned that the African American music scene finally exploded in the early seventies. We can't leave them out. Sly and the Family Stone was simply incredible, and definitively American. Still waiting for someone to mention some band we've forgotten. Let's not forget anyone. They reached for immortality, lets make them immortal by remembering them. |

Since rock & roll was originally just blues (and sometimes country) played badly I'd like to add Muddy Waters

I was gonna say Sly and the Family stone. But are they a rock and roll band? I don't think so.
But just to be a disturber, I'd like to note the race, gender and linguistic gradients of these discussions. John
