FM
Back when I got my driver's license (what year was it? My guess is about 1978, but I'm not sure), guys with cars drove around listening to music. That's what we did. If we were lucky, we had girls in the car. If we weren't, we didn't. And of course there was the 8-track-player, and a lot of my friends used 8-tracks. But me...well...I was too cheap. I just bought LPs, and when I got in my car, I listened to the radio. But there was two kinds of radio back then: AM and FM. AM meant hits that the girls were listening to. FM meant something else. Does anyone else feel nostalgic for that time? My Lord, FM was my world when I was in my car. Yeah, I was driving around the island of Oahu, and some of you might think that the beaches were more important than the music. Not for me. For me, there was FM. The reason I thought of this is this: I heard more incredible music driving around the island (what? and where could I begin? I don't know. Does Robin Trower come to anyone's mind other than mind? Probably not. You weren't driving around Oahu.), than perhaps any other time in my life. It was the late seventies, and disco was dead and Led Zeppelin did "In Through the Out Door", and things were very confused. Very. But FM was different than AM, and that difference made a difference. Know what I mean? I guess that FM as a concept no longer exists. |

Remember? Like it was yesterday. Because it was literally yesterday. I listen to FM 94.5 in my car almost every time I drive.

But that's my question, critter. Is there a difference between AM and FM conceptually these days?

I used to love Robin Trower and got a greatest hits cd a few years back. Yeah, when I think of "FM" around the 70's it meant KMET! That was the coolest station by far. But FM in general was definitely different than AM. It still is in some ways but not the same. I remember listening to Led Zeppelin and Blue Oyster Cult (among others) on 8 track. It was so lame when you always had that one song that got chopped right where it would switch to no. 3 or 4. But hey, we put up with it... what else you gonna do? I was still here in SoCal but at such a different place in life than I am now. A lot of the guys I used to know or hang out with are already gone or still messed up. I don't mean that wrong, I am still messed up in many ways but some of the bad "old habits" have long since been dropped.

I'm not sure what you mean by conceptually. Around here, AM is talk radio and opera, and FM is rock, pop, and country. Mostly. I only listen to AM radio in the afternoon when I want to roll my eyes at Mike Fitzsimmons.

Around here, AM means nothing to music listeners. If you want a sports broadcast, or to listen to American evangelists, AM is there. For music, FM is the only game in town.
So conceptually, it means something quite different than it did 30 years ago. At least around here. John

John, did it mean something different 30 years ago? Like it did in Hawaii?
Back in the day, it would never have been possible for me to hear Robin Trower on AM. |

I still listen to FM. And in my mind there still is a difference.
Although the differences may be greater depending on the market you live in. Living in Detroit, I use to listen to a few of the Canadian FM Stations. They have more airwave freedom then we do here in the states and could play songs or lyrics that were censored over here. Personally, radio in general isn't as interesting as it was then. That's the big problem. Unless you're listening to one of the college stations, it all sounds pretty much the same. Jeff, did you listen to WRIF?

Around that time, I started working oil out in the country and all I had was AM to listen to. It was disappointing. John

I was a toddler 30 years ago so I don't really remember too much about the radio at that exact time.

My radio makes weird space ship noises when I turn my blinker on or drive under power lines
I'mma tell you what though; I rented a car last time I was in Vegas that had that XM Satellite radio and that stuff is great.

We had a couple of DJs in NYC who crossed over from AM to FM, like Scott Muni and Vince Scelsa, both from WABC-AM who landed at WNEW-FM, IIRC, but I probably don't. They were kind of the pioneers of FM free form radio, along with the folks like Bob Fass and Steve Post from the public Pacifica station WBAI-FM. (WBAI would raise money by playing Kate Smith's God Bless America repeatedly until listeners ponied up with the required cash.)
And yes there was a big difference. In 1966 or thereabouts you could hear Downtown by Petula Clark on AM, or Like a Rolling Stone on FM. The major AM stations sponsored concerts from time to time. I remember I went to a concert at the Paramount Theatre in Brooklyn sponsored by the WMCA Good Guys. On one bill were The Four Seasons, Lou Christie, Little Anthony and the Imperials, and a wild singer I had never heard of before, named James Brown. I love being an old fart.

As I recall FM was stereo and AM mono.
