Hello,
I've been looking for the monte trick that Harry Anderson did on SNL. In this one he introduced a fourth card and tucked it behind the lapel of his jacket. Does anyone know the name of this and where I can find it? It's on uTube "Little Game of Hanky Poo" in the file. Thanks, Tom

There's now lots of three card tricks with four cards, and whilst not having seen the clip, the lapel bit sounds like the early Joe Riding "The Only Three Card Trick In THe World -Using Four Cards" which was originally marketed by Ken Brooke and a very popular effect prior to Martin Lewis's "Sidewalk Shuffle".
Both effects climax with the 'money' card no longer being the odd card out, e.g. there are now three of them and the remaining card is the odd one. With Martin's effect blanks and an ace are used (and different method). Paul. |

Thank you Paul. I did find that on the Hank Lee website but I wasn't sure is was the same trick. They do say it was originated by Joe Riding so I'm figuring it's the one. Would you happen to know of a source book/DVD that covers this version?
Thanks again, Tom

Poor Man's Monte is a close-up/parlor version with 4 cards by Colombini. I can't remember which DVD/book it is, but if you can find it, it's great.

Poor Man's Monte can be found also on Aldo's DVD "A Few Good Cards" which has some other good packet effects on and can be picked up from Aldo for $10. Play around with that, but with Jumbo cards and you have something similar to Joe's routine.
I don't think Joe's original routine appeared in any books. Paul. |

Joe Riding's "Only 3 Card Trick With 4 Cards" was a marketed effect. It's still sold today. It's available from Hank Lee here
http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/product.php?productid=3380 I'm pretty sure this is what Tom is looking for. Here's a quote from the ad. "This is the one Doug Henning did a few years ago on one of his early television specials. The one Harry Anderson performed on Network TV. Basically. It's a three card monte variation; done with Jumbo cards."

Apart from Ken, Joe also later sold it himself, with additional gags. Lot's of pro's used it in the seventies and eighties. I recall it got a mention in that fine book "Small But Deadly". |

And I still do it occasionally... everything above is correct; let me remark that Fred Kaps added a few fine touches to the routine which Ken Brook described in his instructions. Jan

So Jan. Which version are you talking about?
Thanks, the one on Hank Lee was what I thought I was looking for but I wanted to run it past the Café' members to make sure. Now it looks like I have several to look at. Thanks a lot, Tom

In an attempt to contribute something worthwhile to this thread, you might also want to check out Paul Gordon's "Corner of Piccadilly", another good four card monte trick that has a similar sting in the tail: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WNG4FmfenU Marty |

Another "4 Card Monte" that goes well with the Anderson patter is The Virginia City Shuffle by Louis Falanga.

I have this, it is in the back of the booklet that featured Fred Kaps handling of the Sidewalk Shuffle which is wonderul by the way. In the instructions for the Three Card Monte using Four cards, they mention illustrations, but none is given. Does anyone have the illustrations to this or does your copy have the same problem. I don't need the text as I have that. I'm sure I can figure it out from it, but it might be better with the drawings. |

Now that HankLee's shop is closed, where might someone purchase the Joe Riding 'Only 3 card trick with 4 cards' WITH JUMBO CARDS, please? Any one know? And what happened to Joe's stock?

Buy any two jumbo decks of cards (with the same color back), from a magic store or even from the dollar store.

Thanks for reminding me about Harry Anderson's routine http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7PrvGPlwNmw I can understand it from there. I remember when he use to be on Saturday Night Live. It was from there he got on Cheers that led him to be on Night Court.
